Riding motorcycles takes a great deal of hand eye coordination. Racing a great deal more. Some started out riding motorcycles from a very young age. No need for the training wheels, they just jumped on and can do it. Others work their way up at a slower pace and can turn out being just as good. With so many sports out there, motorcycling is kind of in a class of its own. When it comes to body mechanics. No sport is like it. But some sports we play when we are young do help with the hand eye coordination needed to be a fairly fast motorcycle racer. So all this being said; i was very interested in what other sports AFM racers where competitive in, before they started. What sports were you guys and gals top of their class in?

My self: ABA and NBL National top ten most every year from 5-8 and from 15-20 Then won the national team title in 2000 with Powerlite. I raced for Specialized, Redman, Celeste, and Powerlite Bicycles

Surfing (30+ years but never competed)

I didn't start riding motos until I was about 38 and racing motos at 40 (I'm 42 now). The DH racing seems to have carried over the most. Surprisingly enough I suck on a dirt bike. I really wish motos were something I had the opportunity to do when I was young.

I started playing baseball at a really young age, and then through College. I was a catcher, and I think other than athletic awareness, it taught me how to use my entire field of vision, how to accurately judge the speed and movement of an object, etc.

I also think it helped teach me how the process in order to progress and understand what needs to be done to succeed in any sport.

I played baseball growing up all the way through my college years. I did pretty well but not well enough to be paid for it :( Moved on to golf and then to Motorcycles in my late 30's.

While I didn't get into motorcycles until well into my adult years, I did ride bicycles all through my elementary school days. My first real bike was a Mongoose, then a few Cook Bros. I really enjoyed those bikes...but never raced anything until Rd. 6 at Sonoma last year.

Norba no shit. Do you know Chris Powell or Jill Kintner? I trained them for years

I've always sucked at throwing and catching :) Paintball though!

High school chess champion. Motorcycles are scary.

I played competitive golf from age 8 to college. Won a few tournaments along the way. Played baseball, one of my teammates played for the Yankees and won the World Series. He got the scholarship to Stanford, I didn't.

Funny how similar golf is to road racing bikes, there are a million things to learn, and you never stop learning. Both take a lot of focus and mental toughness when under pressure. Also coordination, ability, balance, and practice, practice, practice. I don't play much anymore but still play to a 1-handicap.

College rugby, second row. Look it up, 'locks' are the big boys in rugby. Our college football team's players were eventually prohibited from playing rugby with us in the off-season. They kept getting hurt. Some by me. Mostly unintentional.

It seemed like a natural progression to spend the next 18 years as a motorcycle jockey... wait, :wtf Many thanks to all my so-called friends who encouraged me, that's like telling Berto to follow his NBA dreams! :laughing

Rugby and Football for 7 years. Not sure anything translates to moto racing though. Maybe the vision processing and split-second decision making...?

Does my interpretive dancing count as a sport? :laughing

Forwards always think the game revolves around them!!! I suppose some are so fat they have their own gravitational pull!!! :twofinger

Wrestling
Pole Vault
Giant Slalom

Never great at any of them; but, got pretty good. The best I ever got in GS was a 2nd place.

I could never make up my mind what sport to play. I skateboarded, roller bladed on my half pipe, played both roller hockey and ice hockey. Track & field, football, BMX, Mountain biking . I sucked at basketball but could dunk in the 9th grade. This first time i ever rode a street bike I was 21.

It's starting to sound like that major eye hand skills were learned from all your guys past sports. Pretty cool to know where you came from

Hand eye coordination??
Holding porn mags and having a wank :rofl
Sorry couldn't resist.
