I wear the Fox standard knee/shin ones when I ride the YZF on the street most of the time in jeans ... ive seen firsthand what happens to jeans vs. leather when you hit the ground.
The story:
Did a little biking after work with my buddy Chris Tucker. We did a loop at Waterdog in Belmont and Chris fell on one steep/technical descent and cut up his knee a bit, some bactine and we were riding again. Then we met up two dudes as we were about to head up to the Carlmont jumps (I guess its called DMC) . We showed these dudes from SF a cool jumping spot and started to head down the hill to hit the next section and go home.
I decided to take a particular jump with more speed to clear farther and land on the down part of it (called a double). The landing was wet clay and I just didnt hit it right. Before I knew it, I was tangled with my bike but all right it seemed (those who know me well know I dislocate shoulders frequently!) Looked down and saw a good amount of blood. I had split my forearm open (possibly on a rock or branch where I landed) and we actually had to wrap a shirt around the arm to stop the blood that was pumping out! I wasn't sure right away if it needed stitches but I guess if you have to question it, it warrants a trip to the hospital. Bike got tweaked a bit, my derailleur (rear shifter) is bent and my rear brakes were bound up on the rim, but otherwise bike and rider "ok". I went home to clean it up, but had to go to the ER. 1 hour, 7 stitches later and a nice shot of painkiller to the area, they let me go =P The docotor said to me "i can fix that" and then later after the 6th stitch, he said "this is going to be expensive, hope you have insurance". Never had stitches before, but a $20 set of elbow pads (like the ones I had on my knees) would have saved me all that pain/time/money I spent today. Im about to order some ;-)

I was pretty much just in shock (literal and figurative. I didnt even really hurt, my hip and shoulder hurt more than the inch long, deep gash. The stitces and cleaning irritatited it, more pain, but longrun it means less scar, quicker healing, get to Thunderhill for my tday
