Stock Thread 2019

Some considerations for next year:

ADX. Buy after mid Jan.
SPE Buy post Dec. dividend.
AMLP MLP fund of funds, 1099 not K1, at historical low. It's a bet on oil, purely and simply.

Why mid Jan?

Why mid Jan?

ADX pays some ripe dividends every year, and in an up market they pay a large Dec. annual dividend, which knocks the price down the dividend amount. End of Dec. to mid Jan is typically the lowest ADX reaches in the year, thus you're buying at a dip. It's pretty cyclical, ADX usually drops until end of Dec. or mid Jan.

It's not bullet proof by any means, but it happens often enough to entice me. The ADX dividend is a moderate monthly dividend, the end of year dividend is large, and better than that, it's mostly long term capital gains. ADX is a very old fund. We're talking close to 100 years old, with the parent company even older. Originally they were a freight hauler.

Plus you are buying blue chip at a substantial discount. This year was stellar for me with ADX.

Their history doesn't seem to reflect a reliable discount. Be nice if they repeat last year, but before that it's much less pronounced. What's your rough target to buy in?

Under $15, maybe $14.50.

Too late mow, but I wonder what the criteria is to qualify for the year end dividend? Kinda seems like it'd have been better to get in on it if you were willing to buy at $15..?

Ex div date was ten days ago, Nov. 21 or so.... It traded ex div at $16.52 and fell to $15.43.

It's a nice div, but you may end up holding the security for a year to see it recover.

If I were to ever buy a stock without caring about how overvalued the market is, it'd be VDIGX. And if I were to ever put all my eggs into one basket, it'd be VDIGX.

Yeah, my cousin is keeping it simple, socking away money into a S&P 500 index fund for her young daughter.

Anyone own Peloton stock? The commercial fiasco is hilarious!

Damn. Just googled some SP 500 funds and one site said a $10,000 investment in 1980 would be $760,000 today. Didn't specify which fund.

Don’t know what sort of S&P fund could generate that kind of return. The S&P return isn’t close to that. You’re talking MSFT & AAPL sorts of gains.

Those kind of returns are in the ballpark for the S&P 500 if you re-invest dividends. This calculator shows ~11% a year return over that time period with dividends reinvested. 40 years of compounding interest and dividends adds up.

I did this last year on your advice :afm199. Currently up 12%. Thankyou

Probably one of the best investments I have made! I bought more today.

Warren Buffett said something like: "I have plenty of time to research and diversify. Anyone who doesn't should just buy VOO."
