getting a weird surging around 55mph. Any ideas to look for?

could I just be in too high of a gear for the speed?

What bike? Any mods (pipe, air filter, etc.)? Last time serviced?

We need more info.

stock 2001 kawi ZR7S, 30k on it.

only had it a few weeks. Took it out for the longest ride yet this morning and noticed the surging when criusing about 55.

just noticed chain is on the tight side. Also going to check the air filter.

previous owner did go down a few teeth on the rear. Plan on going back to stock or bigger soon.

Am I missing something? Seems like 'just being in the wrong gear' would just leave you underpowered rather than with cyclic or erratic surging...

Or to say the same thing differently: sounds like there's something in need of adjustment. Cruising in a different gear / at a different engine speed will let you avoid the trouble spot but doesn't fix it.

Have you done standard tune up stuff for a new-old bike like new plugs and carb balancing?

Not sure if I fixed it, still need to go ride but, I did do alot of maintance today.

The filter was the dirtiest Ive ever seen. I adjusted and cleaned the chain. I also got new plugs.

trying to get skippy to come out and sync the carbs and do a valve adjustment.

What rpm are you at when you are going 55 mph?

4k surge happens but it is not necessarily low rpm on that bike.

so what other things should I look for? feels smooth and stable going down redwood rd. When I git the freway and hold a 55-65 speed it surges. Almost afraid to ride it.

also now that im thinking about it when it does "surge" Im pretty sure the tach needle is not bouncing around.

So the chain isn't tight in one spot then? Sometimes you only notice the surging from a irregularly stretched chain when you're cruising and not revving up through the gears.

I have not noticed a kink or tight spot. I will double check. The chain was adjusted way too tight.

going to take it out on the freway tonite to see if any of things I did fixed it.

huh, usually if a surge or kind of stutter step is happening and is engine related it is noticed at an RPM range in any gear at any speed. Sounds like it might be wheel ballance type issue. Are the tires staight as in is say the chain tensioner equall on both sides so the rear is straight? Those issues are more noticable at higher speeds. Anyway some think surge and its a wobble but you know what you are feeling better than I.

Are you at relatively low throttle on the freeway? If this is true I think you have a lean condition because its a steady low throttle position. This is a carburetor bike correct ? You said previous owner went down a few teeth in the rear ? Most bikes come from the factory really lean on the bottom.

True, my XT had a stutter at about 4500 RPMs at any speed in any gear if the throttle was constant. Needle up, larger jet and it was gone. That bike is infamously lean though. What's the spark plug reading? To test the range that it stutters you have to run it awhile at that RPM range and cut it off. Just as if you want to read the plug at idle you have to let it idle then shut it off, etc.

fack, went to do a plug reading and when I pulled off the wire I broke it.

where is the best place to get wires.

on a positive note plugs looked good.

Can you trim it and just screw it back on?
