Survey: 69% of Americans Have Less Than $1,000 in Savings

I know several people who still think social security will fund their whole retirement. My plan is that it won't be there at all so if it is, then its just a bonus. I would think most people no longer have a savings account regardless of how much cash they have on hand so I take the statistic with a grain of salt. What matters is access to liquid or near liquid assets in case of loss of income. Most people in this country don't have nearly enough or any set aside for that regardless of the form it is held in. Many reasons for this.

Fyi.... An income of $32,400 per year would allow someone to be among the top 1% of income earners in the world.

Whoopdie Fucking Do when you LIVE in America.

Sorry man this argument is too stupid to continue.

Amazing that at age 21 in the 80s my then g/f and I took the frugal approach and sacrificed "fun" to start fully funding IRAs.

We both agreed that "social security wouldn't be there" when the time comes.

Glad we were wrong on the SS piece but waiting till 70 to access that.

At least that's the current plan at age 63.

Sacrificing for tomorrow, or to have money at hand, is not the American Way.

I wish that "spending less money" was at least mentioned once.

But that's old fashioned and unAmerican. Yes, I know, today's different, and it's embarrassing to bring your own lunch to work.

What's it like living your life the way you do?

Lighten up, Francis....

I'm pretty easy man, its just the dumbest thing ever to say "Hey you are rich in Sri Lanka!" When someone is struggling to make ends meet. Am I supposed to work 9-5 in Santa Cruz and commute to Kotte? It aggravates me that people trot this argument out as soon as wealth distribution is brought up. To be clear I don't think YOU are dumb, I'm just so annoyed with this argument and you brought it up.

I take messages like that to imply that at some point, I/you/we should leave areas which have shitty cost of living. I know it sucks to feel pushed out of an area we love, but the area doesn't love us back so fuck it.

69%. Nice.

Well.....

... Actually, it's 68, and I owe you one.

MY GOD MAN! We're not savages!

Sure but when you trot out "world wide!" like it's some kind of feasible option for most people it's just silly.

Can you tell this argument bothers me? :laughing

Fair enough! :thumbup

You could be King of Burundi!

I just took it to be a little fun fact Cliff Clavin like comment. Don't think it was an argument being made.

What would happen to the economy if everyone did that. Spending is encouraged, the nation thrives on people being irresponsible.

Many have to fail for others to succeed :flag

I took the statement to refer to the large world population that is primarily concerned with food and shelter. Living in the USA often includes the car, the phone and the size matters tv and the attendant subscription services.
Fyi I’ve got a full 43” :twofinger
Yes it’s dollars versus pesos or bahts but ones lifestyle is a factor, I suspect 68% of those wishing higher wages would not see a savings increase, only a spending increase.
I’m tired and can’t decide, cappuccino or Philz :wtf
Plus I really need a pedicure :cool

Milenials Spend mess money and their reward is article after article about them killing industries

The consumerist endless growth programming runs deep, to the point that it's taught as what's "right" in economics and not a self-propagated fabrication of unconstrained greed with no concern for the future.

That statistic, if true, is as much a function of how much people spend as it is about income. There is no reason that almost anyone who isn't homeless, should have less than $1,000 saved for a rainy day, unless they don't have control of their spending. So sick of hearing about how poor everyone is when all I see are new cars on the road and $1,000 cell phones in the hands of just about every, man, woman and child in the U.S. If you have less than $1k saved, you should be unshaven, poorly clothed, shoeless and lacking any kind of cell phone service. If you have any of those and you're still dead broke, it's most likely on you and your bad fucking decisions.

It's a tired boomer argument when you just can't comprehend paying rent and everything else at wages that are constantly getting lapped by inflation - only now with tons more debt because *cough* someone told us all to go to college if we wanted to make something of ourselves.

But yeah, let's not look at the systemic exploitation of labor and students and instead let's blame starbucks and apple.

agreed :thumbup

also i think the story would be different if the survey instead asked if those were able to charge $1000 to a credit card in an emergency
