SV motor in RVF Chassis Project

rothmans said:
How much does the SV engine weigh? Could you shoehorn an RC51 lump in there...I have a few of those laying around :laughing

It is probably too much for the RVF chassis , but I wonder how much larger it is than the SV650, I know the RC engine weighs about 134lbs with out the FI and some other stuff on it.

Cool stuff as allways Chris.

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't weighed the SV motor but the RVF is no feather-weight. Smaller parts but LOTS of them. It shouldn't be too muh different one way or the other, weight-wise. I'll look for savings in all the carbon fiber stuff.

And as for other motor options, I checked a few others - TL1000, Aprilia Mille and yes, RC-51. The '51 is a BIG motor. No way it would work. The Mille nearly fit but may wall have been too much...but if more is good, then too much should be just right! :p

If it was 'money no object', what I REALLY want to use is the new Aprilia 550 super moto v-twin. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone do something like this. Or just wait for Aprilia to stuff it into the RS250 chassis...

More as I find the time.

you sure rc is 134#?
sv motor weights 135.

Oh yes, I have shipped a couple, and once packed up just came under the UPS 150lb limit...now mind you I weighed it with my bathroom scale...not the most accurate :laughing but close.
But 134lbs was with the throttle bodies/FI setup and oil cooler off the engine...

It would look a little something like this minus the oil cooler....you would think it would weigh more considering how heavy an RC51 is....

oops wrong pic...also that weight is without all the smog PAIR junk and cooling lines, thermostat housing etc etc...pretty bare. I wish I was as skilled as you and Chris, Zoran, I would love to stuff an RC51 engine into a bunch of different bikes...:laughing

I only did "minor" modifications on my VFR400R.

This is really cool. Your bike will rule!

Good luck!

Javlar! Looks good!

DANG!

Chris,

YOU ARE A MAD-MAN!!! But trust me, it's a GOOD thing :teeth

Lookin forward to seein any progress you make on this one.

How is the body on the SV/MV/GSXR/THING comin?

Potential Home for Motor

I have a happy and loving home for that motor in my newly crankless racing SV. Especially if you go with the 500 or something else. Please let either Zoran (I'm one of his many satisfied customers) or I know what you would like to receive for that engine if you are interested.

Thanks

Folks have been asking about this project so I thought I'd get out a quick update -
I've done almost nothing on this, or the Zoran carbon tank project. It's madness at work plus the bicycling season is upon us. My wife and I are a resonably serious road tandem team so there goes Sat/Sun mornings.

Plus I've purchased a 748 that needs some love and to top it all off, have acquired a diesel pick up that we're converting to run on waste vegetable oil. Once that's all done and debugged, it's sacrificing its drive train to a 55-59 Chevy truck hot rod project. I've yet to see a grease burning turbo diesel hot rod truck. Plus I can leverage my composite experience and really make an interesting turck. But I digress...

I've decided to swap the FI SV motor for a carb model but I've not received the exchange motor yet. But this weekend, I pulled my SV/MV all apart to get it powdercoated/painted.

This means I have a carb motor sitting there willing to be fit into the RVF chassis. I swear I will make progress on this in the next month or so - it's just too cool a project to back burner for too much longer.

Yes, I know this is a lame update but it is what it is. More interesting updates as they occur.

Well, I think it's time to try and make some actual progress on this. I've pulled apart my SV/MV for full powder coat and paint (I'll post the rebuild in a new thread) so the the motor was free to be trial fitted into the RVF chassis.
I wanted to get a better feel for how everything would or wouldn't fit, what looked like it would need modification, cutting, new brackets, etc.
So far, it looks pretty good.

I'm running the prototype Dunlop clear compound front tire... :teeth

No worries, nothing permanent will happen until I've checked and verified all suspension travel interference/clearance issues, etc.

A bit of a tight fit but it's looking like it's going to work out. Hose routing and all that TBD once the motor mounts get fabbed.

Hard to see from my super-duper photo but the chain line is going to be fine.

The karma thing in action:
Who'd have guessed that the SV and RVF would both run left-offset shocks to clear the rear exhaust pipe?
Note that's not the stock SV exhaust manifold. That's the one that's been tweaked to work with the exhaust system on the SV/MV. The stock one points in a bit better direction.
A bit of cutting, fabbing and welding and it's 'RVS 650' time! :cool

Wish me luck!

Nice cobwebs.

Thanks, they're part of a matched set and came with the dust that's all over the wheel in that previous pic. But really tricky to install, let me tell you...
