Tales from the crib - What is the worst maintenance items you've encountered with your bike?

Not really maintenance but I shattered the piston and cracked the cylinder on a KX125. Had to rebuild the whole top and bottom end. Just got a manual, read how to do it and did it. Crazy thing is it actually ran when I got it all back together.

That's a great feeling, when you've had an engine mostly apart and it comes back alive then you get it back together!

I've done that with several cars when I was younger, haven't with a motorcycle yet, perhaps some day.

Found out a cool little trick last week.

Kill switch was acting up a big, I had to get the switch just right to start it. Looked online and several people suggested giving it a squirt (internals, but could do so without fully removing it) with contact cleaner. It worked like a charm!

Thought I'd pass that on to others in case they had a switch starting to act up.

Fuel filter, Oilhead

Changing the fuel filter in my R1100RS was a major pain.
A whole lot of taking shit apart to do a simple maintenance item.

And while I'm bitching, bleeding the ABS brake unit on the same bike was an exercise resulting in moderate brain damage.

Valve check on Superhawk also a knuckle smashing , teethgnashing procedure. Swapping a Fox shock in to the VTR also damaging to fingers.

I'm sure there are others, like trying to stop Triumph Bonneville push rod tubes from leaking ...or ....nevermind.

But my GL1000 air filter was no biggie, but it's hard to remember if I actually ever changed it.

The most aggravating things are often the ones you would think should be easy for anyone to do. That must be why mechanics have job security.

Started to hear a bearing rumble last month. Disappointed that it began to wear at 60,000 miles. Decided that I'd tackle the job before I had to stuff a car in the garage for the winter and loose all the work space.

:laughing Yeah. Not maintenance.

I think "Repair" moves to a higher echelon !!

Most intensive I can recall was the carb rebuild on my '74 Z1.
Gonna have to do it again before I ride it.
