So I am flipping through the channels yesterday and I come upon this funeral procession they call Formula 1 racing. Ok, they sound cool and go, like, really fast through the turns n stuff but what a snooze-fest :zzz

Anyway, a car comes out of a corner, hits the rumble strip, gets squirrelly and the commentator called it a "Tankslapper" :wtf

Excuse me car dude, that's a motorcycle racing term and you can't have it :mad

Yeah, I was watching the race when I heard that, too. He probably didn't know what he was talking about but thought that it sounded cool. Like any sport, you gotta put a little time investment in to understand the nuances. The cars look cartoonish this year, but I hope the racing will be top-notch nevertheless.

I think it was Bob Varsha that said it, and he has a long history of covering motorcycle racing so it was probably the only thing he could equate it to.

It was David Hobbs, and he has forgotten more about motorsports--of all kinds--than y'all are ever gonna know.

I have no problem conceding that David Hobbs has forgotten more than I'll ever know. But really... tank slapper? In what way could could that relate to a car? And since I think Hobbs commentary is the only reason to watch F1, I just hope he hasn't forgotten too much

for those of you not F1 fans, that was the most exciting F1 race...granted the cars look disproportinate this year, but their was so much dicing and overtaking going on...

props to F1 for finally doing something right!!

Other notable facts about yesterdays race:
BrawnGP, who finished 1&2 yesterday, were as of 2 months ago the defunct Honda F1 Team who spent 300 Million in 08 to finish Dead last.

Ferrari was nowhere near the podium and mclaren really had to struggle.

And you gotta love how BMW & Red Bull Racing took each other out of podium contention in the final 3 laps.

You can get that kind of dicing in every race, just reverse the qualifying order at the start. :nerd

That was effectively accomplished by the new rules, especially the diffuser rules that only two teams interpreted properly (or was it a gamble that paid off, or something else), which effectively put the top drivers from the last 3 years behind the first 10 starters. Add to that a tight track with few over-taking places and you have the kind of race that we saw yesterday.

In regards to David Hobbs, that guy has more knowledge about his sport than every motorcycle racing announcer in every class put together. I'll give him a free pass on this one, all things considered.

Congrats to Brawn for dominating with that "defunct" team. That guy is amazing.

As for the "tankslapper", if you saw the replay of that you might understand. It was a very quick left-right-left (very close lock to lock) with the steering wheel.

when he yells out that one of the cars lowsided then ill be impressed :x

The BBC1 coverage did not suck at all. I pretty much gave up on the speed channel long time ago.

I watched both feed for qualifying and if you listen to the speed announcers it seems they have ZERO idea of whats going on (they started placing people on pole WAY before the last session was over, as if the track doesn't rubber in and get quicker towards the end of the session)

P.S. notice how most of the crashes that affected the outcome came through that corner. Nakajima then Kubica and Vettel (though I think that was an aftermath crash, from them getting together. Their suspensions were fine they just had ZERO down force with no front wings thus crashing in the next turn)

I thought I heard it was 3 teams (I could be wrong though)

POSSIBLE SPOILER TO FOLLOW. SO, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE RACE.

Did you hear the interview with Rubens Barrichello after the race. He said that his diffuser was destroyed in the turn 1 incident. That coupled with his front wing problem, I he was still flying.

Actually I think turn 1 it was minor damage as he was still flying but a few more laps in he tangled a bit with Raikonen and that did him in for a new nose. His laps started falling off and they brought him in, lucky him his fuel stop was approaching anyways.

BUT yea I am AMAZED at the durability of those cars. Even if you look at the Kubica Vettel incident their suspension survived when the drove over each other. Especially after last years RedBull suspension that broke way too much.

Well, obviously, he forgot the difference between a two wheeled vehicle and a four wheeled vehicle. :rolleyes

Hobbs was a great racer and he can be very funny. But, that doesn't mean that he gets a free pass on being a moron for the moment. We all have our dumb moments. Mine are more frequent than I would like to have happen.

He has had MANY silly moments before at venues like Le Mans. But, usually I just roll my eyes and remember how fast that he was there. The man may not talk goodness, but he sure can drive goodness.

I fell asleep during the live b'cast & missed the re-run [out riding !]

where may I watch the race online?
