This is true for any car.

For a car of this size and performance, $35k typically gets you a well optioned car with leather, power everything, various electronic features, etc., not a car with less interior features than a base Camry. The $35k price is an irrelevant joke. The true price of this car, as sold, will likely average in the high $40's to low $50s. That puts it in the range of larger more luxurious ICE cars. Still may be a good car, but it is not a $35k car.

The ROI on a tesla versus ICE is junk. A used hybrid for $15k will cost by far less per mile than a tesla (batteries included). It's a status thing, not a necessity.

Plus it's a statement that you own a house too as you can't charge your tesla at your apartment/(some) condo's.

With the model 3, the BOLT should be dropping in price significantly making it a better option for those who aren't about the luxuries. I'd prefer a plug in hybrid...go when you can't charge, and flow when you have full juice.
 
They make it available in a color no one wants just so they can low ball the base price in their ads.

I agree, but don't crucify Tesla for it. They are trying to make money... one day.

The Chevy Bolt charges ~$400 for a color other than black, white and gray. Yes, Chevy is a better deal on paint.

Also, one thing that the comparison got wrong: you need to add $750 to get DC fast charging on the Bolt which is significantly slower charging than Teslas standard "Supercharging". If you get the 310 mile range Tesla Model 3, then the charging is even faster with is almost double that of the Bolt at 170 miles of range in a half hour. Its obvious that recharge time is EVs weakness, why not limit it. The DC fast charge network today is OK, but Tesla is much better. Sorry Bolt.

Also, the Bolt requires a $500 package for Auto brakeing, where Tesla has that standard.

So its more like comparing a $35,000 Tesla to a $37,870 Chevy.
 
IMO the Bolt interior is nicer. Also, 3 screens - including a proper digital dash in front of the driver and a display instead of a conventional rearview mirror.

I dunno, maybe need to see Tesla interior in person but it doesn't seem that special or luxurious to me.
 

First off, it's the Daily Mail. Imagine the National Enquirer trying to pretend to be a real newspaper and you've got the right image.

Second, it's no different than other products coming from the third world. Do you drink coffee, eat chocolate, bought a diamond, wear shirts that cost less than $50 (heck many that cost more than that too), and on and on. It's no different.

It's certainly more than advanced cruise control that is typically only speed adjustments (zero to set point to zero). Tesla's will stay within their lane (on less than perfectly straight lanes), 280 from SJ to SF for instance. They will also change lanes when the driver signals (without input to the steering wheel).

You're comparing a used car to a new one - hardly fair.

If you wanted ROI, get a 2-year old Fiat 500e for $7k or less.

At 3.5mi/kwh and a price of 20c per Kwh on average, the 100,000 mile cost of an EV is $5714 (the M3 reportedly gets 4.2mi/kwh, but that's yet to be proven among a fleet average).

The price to run a 45mpg hybrid for 100K/mi is $7700 based on $3.50 a gallon.

Impressively close, but on the California grid, the EV still beats the snot out of it for emissions.

Regarding the M3, there aren't many cars out there that have the same performance, that can boast a similar carbon footprint (albeit on the California grid - West Virginia's makes it around the same as a 35mpg car, Vermont's is crazy in the other direction with almost no carbon footprint at all, for example).

This is not that special. Other cars have this.

You still need to keep hands on steering wheel, and it's far from perfect.

Honestly, the idea of that is much more terrifying to me than an actual autodrive.

It doesn't work 100% of the time. I've seen it lose the lane on 101 coming out of SF.

Also it seems to apply the brakes automatically if you don't keep your hand on the steering wheel for a certain period of time.

Most new cars that are not econoboxes have this type of system as an option.

It's great for sitting in traffic or road trips, but hardly a replacement for an actual driver.
