Tesla Model 3: End of the Internal-Combustion Engine?

It doesn't work 100% of the time. I've seen it lose the lane on 101 coming out of SF.

Also it seems to apply the brakes automatically if you don't keep your hand on the steering wheel for a certain period of time.

Most new cars that are not econoboxes have this type of system as an option.

It's great for sitting in traffic or road trips, but hardly a replacement for an actual driver.

What car would that be?

Footnotes:

Tesla is going to take over the car biz

What about autonomous driving?

Slave children in the Congo make Tesla batteries :/

it's their fault for being born in the Congo fuck it

Buy more shit and keep the world turning

Yay more cars!!

it's a trip, but i'm startig to like driving electric. It's just so quiet and smooth:afm199

Yeah, I really enjoy farting around in my little orange creamicle colored Fiat 500e too. Smoooooooth, quiet, "quick" and a little go kart of it's own kind. Just wish it had a much better recharge option like the tesla. I could imagine 10 minutes would get me from near zero to almost full in my little fiat on that tesla supercharger.

Nothing like guiltlessly and noiselessly just leaving most cars behind, or hooning around at 6am in the woods and not bugging the shit out of your neighbors :thumbup

Lease on mine ends in 1 year; getting the M3 around November, but seriously considering buying the orange booble-car at the end of the lease (they are sooo freaking cheap!).

What my GF pays in gas would pay off the Fiat in about 2 years, even charging at peak rates.

The 0-30 on the Fiat is super-fun. Just wish it was RWD; damn thing lights up the fronts far too easily.

It's certainly more than advanced cruise control that is typically only speed adjustments (zero to set point to zero). Tesla's will stay within their lane (on less than perfectly straight lanes), 280 from SJ to SF for instance. They will also change lanes when the driver signals (without input to the steering wheel).

Yeap, and that's understating (Hi Tim!).

The radar keeps track of all the vehicles around it.

It bounces off the road under the cars in front to get an idea of relative positions and speeds of the cars around it.

It predicted a collision in front of the car in front of it by calculating the relative speeds of the cars in front of that, and hit the brakes/sounded the alarm.

There are innumerable similar examples on YouTube, but this is the most visually impressive, because you can't see shit about what's going on in front until the actual collision.

Disclaimer: I work for Tesla. I am limited in what I can say. The above is repeating already-published statements on how this particular Model S did it.

This is not that special. Other cars have this.

You still need to keep hands on steering wheel, and it's far from perfect.

What other cars have a semi-autonomous driving system comparable to Tesla?

I realize that a crap-load of cars have adaptive cruise, and collision avoidance. I'm not talking about those.

I didn't realize that Tesla could predict cars in front of the car in front. That's pretty insane. The auto switching lanes is cool too although probably not that useful.

But other cars like Audi A4 also have adaptive cruise in traffic (down to a full stop) as well as lane assist, so IMO it's not that much different.

You're right in that the new Tesla CC is probably superior to anything else out there.

I saw the first Model 3 with paper plates & not MFG plates today. Looks nice in red.

I guess I'll get one when the lease on my current EV runs out. What's the wait time supposed to be right now?

Our '17 Volvo XC90 has semi-autonmous driving that is similar and probably just slightly right around the Tesla AP1 cars. Works pretty good and all the way to 80mph.

If you order right now, you will probably get your car in 3 years.

Have to be very careful in what I say, but, you can 'skip the line' by choosing options that are available now instead of stuff like AWD etc.

What lease do you have? Might be worth buying at the end until your M3 is ready - the price of used short-range EV's is just laughable. Not sure how much further they CAN fall if you were to own it for a yearish.

I'm perfectly happy with the RWD/small battery version, so I am hoping before year-end, but, I'm also number 900 on the list.

Having the smaller battery will be a pain exactly twice per year, going to Palm Springs, but the kids want to stop at least twice, so...

The red is sexy :thumbup

Tesla's is by far the most advanced system that's available on cars today. In its latest form I do believe the car actually could auto drive if they allowed it (with software).

I still have a year and a half on my Spark EV lease. It is $100/mo with 15K mi/yr, so it's a really good deal. I'd be perfectly fine with the "small" battery/rwd as well, so sounds like it shouldn't be a problem to get a M3 in a year once this lease is up.

If you are 'WOT' in a EV, no one bats and eye. That is my experience with my Zero.

If I did not have the Zero Motorcycle, I would look at getting a Tesla Model 3. I use my Zero for transportation 95% of the time.

I love the silent take offs from the line in my Volt (when on pure battery mode).

I might be inclined to look for a 100% battery car down the line but the Volt is paid for and doing its job nicely for the time being.

i know a lot of people that love the HOV lane access with EVs. I've read that CA legislature is not planning on extending this priveledge past 2019 (when it expires). I wonder how big the effect will be when this runs out (like green stickers)

You work in fremont? I'm in fremont and see these beautiful cars daily. I really love the S but my wallet says the 3. Can't wait to get mine soon. I didn't really understand all the hype until I rode in an S. Really amazing cars.
