The Fishing Thread

Got out for an hour. It’s supposed to pour here over the next week, hopefully filling up some of the local creeks and getting trapped fish out and about.

I have these glittery strips from Maui that have been in my tackle box for years. Supposedly they’re good for the local fish there, but I haven’t been to Hawaii since. I’ve caught bass and panfish with them. Literally, sparkly, thin strips for salt. Must look like shad or minnows because they sure do work well.

Thank you for eating what you catch.

I live on the largest fresh water lake in Cali...But you won't catch me eating anything out of this lake...The water is bad.
Algae blooms...toxic run-off from all the bad companies...AND it's only 80 feet deep...The name of the lake is funny...Clear Lake
Perspective...Tahoe is 1800 feet deep.

Catch and release fishing is funny...
I'm not going to eat it...But I am going to make it late for something...R.I.P. Mitch

Clear Lake is also one of the top bass fishing lakes in the state.
I had a discussion about catch and release with a neighbor. He’s a vegetarian but likes to c and r. I said “so you don’t eat them, just torture them for your entertainment”.

Much of San Diego has canyons in between neighborhoods. Any winter and spring rain fills up the streams, creating pools in a few spots. I ride my bikes through there a lot and saw larger fish one time. I figured they’d be some aquarium fish or something invasive. Nope, sunfish. The trout pole, powerbait worms, and tiny hooks made it easy. This was the biggest. The closest spot is 0.5mi from my house.

Sunfish are everywhere you fish here in the Lone Star state. We have Blue Gill, warmouth, shell cracker, crappie, etc. and they are the best tasting fish.

I use bigger hooks as to deter the miniatures from getting on. I suffer from offering free lunch to them because they are aggressive and hungry little bastards. On the cheap, free line rig with bread balls, corn kernels or pieces of hotdog work well. If they’re lazy, I’ll chum the water with bread first.

Sunfish are great for fishing with kids because they’re fighters and bait is easy.

My kid is a sunfish slayer. Gold hook and salmon egg work extremely well. If the bait gets nibbled off they still will hit the gold shiny hook.

the berkley crappie bites work here a long with hot dogs and like you said sometimes just a shiny hook although I have had the bigger ones hit my spinners and other lures for bass.
