The Latest on our Server

Although I'm a little strapped for cash right now I have some extra hardware lying around if you need it. As soon as I'm done with finals I'd be happy to donate my time and some equipment to help.

Post what parts you could use for another image server or other misc hardware. I always have extra machines lying around...

Although I'm not too good on apache tweaking I have a few friends who are also ;)

i can't afford to send $ even though i'm the 2nd biggest poster on BARF (for now, max is getting up there ;)), however i can supply you w/ free labor. ;)

Thanks, everyone, for the support and offers of $$$. I think the game plan is to keep working on providing merchandise so you get something in return for the money you offer. Your generosity is appreciated immensely, but I really prefer to give something back if I take money in.

I'm also seriously considering the PayPal tip jar concept, affectionately labeled the BARF Bucket. You'll know if and when it's online.

As for the ads, yes, I might do something minimal w/ reputable local shops at some time in the future, but as long as we can avoid it I will not clutter the site w/ ads.

The good news is that I've solved one of our problems and I'm working on some others. Looks like I'll get a ride in tomorrow (woohoo) and then it's back to work (and for a great cause, too). The bad news is that it's getting to the point that I don't get to post much anymore! :cry :cry

Thanks again -- everybody -- you're all WHY I built the site (which I prefer to think of an organization or club since we focus on actually meeting each other) in the first place. :teeth :teeth

Well guys I must say I'm impressed. The way I see it Steve has given his time and the inital investment in space and equip to bring all of us together. Through this board I personally met quite a few good people and made some good friends along the way. Steve and I pass ideas around all the time through AOL messinger. I have had a lot of money making ideas tp support this site that I couldn't sell him becuase he is VERY bent on taking care of his people. It's very ovious he has provided a very useful service to us all and asks for absoutely nothing in return. Ya gotta hand it to him. I gaurntee that any donations will goto the site and nothing past that. Pretty soon we will reach the same fork in the road that most sites are reaching. Nothing is free unfortunetly. So there are a few options I can think of. 1) Charge for access like everyone else is doing. 2)Sell stickers and what ever else we can to offset cost. 3)Put up the BARF Bucket. We sure as hell don't wish to charge for access. So the other 2 are our only viable options. Personally I will be pouring as much as I can afford into this. I'm stoked to see others are so openly willing to donate. Please note that MASSIVE thought and time is being put into this to keep the site up with as little impact to the "user" as possible. Steve always says it's not his site, it's OUR site. LETS KEEP OUR SITE UP! Thank you to all who will donate money to the cause. ---DISCLAMER--- The views depicted in this post are not nessesarly those of Bay Area Riders Forum, and can not be reproduced without the express written concent of Likely2Bairborn. :twofinger FYI the cost of this board is comprable to your car payment. Steve is paying out of pocket.

Why not hit up some of the local shops offering some advertising
banners along the top of the page, like SB.N does??

Since alot of peeps on this board frequent the local shops anyway,
I think the local shops owe a little bit from the free advertising already
given through personal recommendations...

My $.02

This is the best idea right here. I'm sure local shops would love to get in. As large as BARF is and specially being as it is local, the shops would greatly benefit.

Well i have to say advertising should be a last resort.
I am also willing to donate to the barf bucket, or buy loadsa stickers and shit but ads are the bane of my life and i think would piss a lot of ppl off.

Banner ads are fine, but I would rather, and maybe we can make it this way, pay a fee and not get pop-up ads. I hate those. Just my $1.50.

Agree with the no adds...I'd much rather pay a fee to be a member or donate small child or something than see the ADD's.
If you had an advertisers THREAD that you can go to if you wanted to see it I think that would be a good tool. I think people would use it if they don't have too!
