I found this while searching for THE bike, that apparently is not in production :(

That's because you need two bikes. One to tow the other one to the dirt. Thanks for chart, though. It shows clearly why I don't have an adventure bike. Although the KTM comes closest, it still weighs 500lbs. And I am NOT lifting [can't lift] a 500lb bike when it goes down in the dirt. And it will go down, at some point.

What the hell is a Honda "Elsenore" 500 ? If it's to follow the previous mx 125/25 Elsinore two strokes that Honda used to make in the 70's, they spelled the name wrong.

Well this explains why I was the worst student they had ever seen in the high school I went to.

I can't read that chart... :rofl

I can't read that chart...

The X axis is motor size in CC, the Y axis is "dirtability" as they describe that term. The higher the point on the graph, the more street oriented it is, further to the right along the X axis, the bigger the motor.

For the one-dimensional:

No KTM 950SE? That's reasonably dirtable but larger displacement. Much more dirtable than the ADV.

KTM needs to make a 790 (800cc) Adventure or Super Enduro that fits right where the word "Perceived" is at on the chart. If it had about 80 hp and weighed not more than 400 pounds it would be just the bike I'm after. I would buy one of those.

Your ideal and mine are not far off Scott! I have always thought a simple lightweight vertical twin in 600cc range would make the perfect adventure bike. Target 65-70hp. Make it air cooled with an oil cooler to save weight, simplicity, crash ability. Oil in frame reservoir to add cooling/capacity/longevity. 7 gallon tank and 50+ mpg. Dakar type styling with real windscreen for highway time. Kick start backup. Should run on any pump gas, no finicky high compression. Carbs... yes carbs. Can be repaired or fixed anywhere. Proper spoked 21/18 wheels. 10-12" of quality suspension (no need for Ohlins, just the good KYB stuff). Steel alloy frame so it can be repaired by a welder anywhere.

BTW Scott. Your old XR is getting ready to head to Baja again next week. :party :ride:teeth

That's a pretty well thought-out spec list. I suppose a KLR is the closest thing that comes to mind.

Honda NC700X ?

Dualsport, enduro, wtf?

Somebody had a brain fart

I agree. If the NC700x had a 19" front wheel and more suspension the motor is 100%. It actually is friendlier in rougher terrain than my F650GS at a lot less cost and with 17s on the front.

Why not punch out a DR to 790?

Except for the lack of suspension - and the weight. The XR650L is closer, minus the kick start, but they can be retrofitted for that. Notice that he does have one of those.

... and the liquid cooling. The DR650 would be closer since it's air-cooled but I'd take the XR650L myself.

The "gap" is filled by the KTM 690 SMC and not being a giant babby.

Or a 950 Super Enduro/SM, which they left off for god only knows why.

Plus, displacement is a nearly meaningless figure in the modern world, thanks to singles and twins with damn near the same displacement making damn near the same HP.

Also, there's a reason no one is building new air cooled bikes. They make terrible HP/liter, they don't stand up to abuse thanks to a larger range of working temps they have to live with, and they're just shitty in general. If you're worried about damaging a radiator on your monthly trip on your R1200GS to starbucks, buy a radiator guard.
