The Official 2016/2017 NFL Thread

After the ball is snapped there isn't nearly enough time to do any coaching. At that point the players are working on instinct and muscle memory. Incoming info from a coach has zero chance of being processed. Coaching is done at practice. Management is done at the game. You may be able to adjust the plan during the game but you'll never be able to coach a player to play better at that point. That ship has sailed by then.

agree on the above. it's more likely someone on the oppo team would find a method of listening in to the other team and using that info to their advantage. maybe not on the play of, but as far as planning against.

can anyone think of any teams really good at making half time adjustments? hrm....

Will the 9ers be picking up Cousins?
I'm good with it. I think he's a solid QB.

IMO a QB should be the very last upgrade the 9ers do. get everthing else in place, but stink it up another year (or two). once the team looks more solid, then get a real QB at the helm.

the GM and coach both have 6 year contracts. with the state of the team, it seems the best move would be to improve at a gradual creep through the draft and some utility player free agents. I'd say as they enter year 3 of their contracts, would be a good time to get a QB.

I can see that. They have a large amount of money to play with. I'd be okay with picking up a solid QB now to bridge the gap. Honestly I think Cousins has what it takes to elevate the team immediately. And they still have the cash/draft picks available to build the team over the next 2-3 years. The NFL is about winning. Suffering through 2-3 more <5-6 win seasons isn't going to improve the culture of the team or make it look like the new FO knows anymore about what it's doing than the old. There has to be progress. I think Cousins could fit well with that progress.

Just adding a good QB to the team isn't going to help much. There are WAY too many holes on offense. I mean, look at Indy. They have an elite QB and a bunch of crap around him.

Paying draft picks to get Cousins now would be stupid when the team has so many other holes to fill. Some of the rumors I saw talked about Cousins and the #17 pick for SF's #2 pick. That would be really, really dumb.

Also next year's draft class is ridiculous for QBs.

Agreed, that would be too much. Look at it this way: if the 9er FO can pull off a good trade it wins in several ways. We get a good QB and the FO starts off with a sign that they know how to manage their resources. And if they walk away because Washington is asking too much then they still look like they know how to manage. The only down side to the discussion is if we overpay for him.

Yeah but the thing is, even if they don't give up a lot of draft capital to get him they still have to sign him to a mega extension.

Cap room is where they are flush and can make a move that won't hurt too badly if it doesn't instantly make the team a SB contender. Even if he doesn't represent the future if he is able to help the team make progress it will keep asses in the seats and pay off in the future. The FO can't afford to mess this up in my book. If they keep doing things that result in the fans walking away they are in for a death spiral caused by the snake of shrinking cash flow eating itself alive over the failure of an FO to field an at least decent team.

Nobody is going to get excited to come and see Kirk Cousins.

Bah. If an NFL team is able to fail, explain Cleveland or Detroit to me? At least SF can win a couple games every decade or so. Revenue sharing makes NFL teams bulletproof from a survivability perspective.

Not Cousins, necessarily/specifically, but winning more than 2 games in a season gives some hope and hope keeps the butts in the seats.

Detroit and Cleveland? What else is there to do in those God forsaken places? Here we have more things to do than pay attention to a shitty NFL team. Not having people in the stands hurts a team's pocketbook no matter how you look at it. That makes it harder to afford/keep good talent by reducing both income and cache.

It doesn't really. They already have the seats sold.

They need to get young and exciting again and compliment it with some solid vets.

Frankly, look at the Raiders. Yea they nailed their draft getting Mack and Carr, but that also brought a level of excitement to the team again.

Victory is still the best deodorant in my book. Doesn't matter who the faces are really. If they start winning the fans will make it a point to know who they are and support them. I think Cousins is a winner. YMMV

No I get it, and if the team WAS just a QB away -- think Houston -- I'd be all in on giving up a 1st for Cousins, but that would also not be #2 overall.

That being said, though, I've been on record multiple times saying that the QB should be the last thing you add to a team when it's time to start pushing toward the playoffs.
