Thinking of the '08+ R6 as next race bike. What to know?

Correction: 2/3d's a GSX-R. If it was the 1800's, that GSX-R wouldn't even be allowed to vote.

:rofl:rofl Thanks for the correction Berto, I have all the parts to make it back into a a GSXR now. Will have it out for the July 4th weekend. You gonna be able to make either one of those days?

Eric I have a new jack question as I experienced a bearing issue in my 08 motor!

What is the proper way to warm up an engine? just so it's out there, and I would like to know.

You've been beyond helpful in this thread and seem religious about warming it up. Is it as simple as turning it on and bringing it up to temp? or are there fancy moves to learn

heat soak that thing! start it and let idle (dont 2 stroke warm it up like berto) and get OVER 190degs in the am..then shut off..your water temp will drop but the oil temp will keep climbing as will the cases/internals. This is why Moto GP bikes use pressurized oil/water that is PRE WARMED (very trick!) before morning warm up.

Then when you get 1st call...warm up again to 180-200 (let thermo open) and when you get last call, it will be @150degs and only take a second for water to get up to temp, probably before you leave pits and by time your passing the s/f line on pit out the bikes engine is FULLY hot/warmed up and ready to rip.

Too many racers think WATER temp and not oil temp on race bikes. HOpe that helps a bit..thats just my way..im sure other tuners have theirs.

Sooooo, Eric...

What kind of magic can you perform on, say, a 2003 ZX6R cylinder head?

:teeth

Might want to double check this. Oil pressure may be pretty weak at idle. The kit oil pump for the 08-09 has increased pressure, whilst for the earlier models its decreased. Not saying you need to wring it's neck, just might want to gently blip it around 2-3K.

yes, the GSXR's are one thing, they have plenty of oil psi at 1,500rpm idle (like Skelotor runs) the R6's i like to run 2K idle (WSS guys run kit oil pumps and 3k idle!) Some riders dont like the idle that high, so i tell them to manually hold it 2-3k for the first few moments...

you can get big hp out of the 03/04 and 05/06 kawi's but the lower ends are the strongest when you start getting over 125rwhp...

Strongest than what? An R6?

Damn iPhone, sorry. "NOT" the strongest. My iPhone glass shattered so hard to see what I'm typing...holdens hangin with us tonight and mocking my phone as I type this!

I hear that some of them have to back off the gas to avoid passing CBR1Ks on the straights. :teeth:later

Thanks again for all of the awesome input:thumbup

After it's all been said and done I've decided to set up my '08 ZX10 as my race bike next year and leave the 600 class alone for another year. :ride

So I bet you can guess what my next thread will be...How the hell do you set up a ZX10? :laughing

haha seriously Eric is unreal when it comes to explaining things and having an extensive wealth of knowledge and uncanny ability to talk smack it's a winning combo for the forums and racetracks. Always been super nice in the brief conversations I've had with him and helpful!

Thanks again EDR:thumbup

is it possible/good idea/necessary to put a 08-09 oil pump in an 07 for increased pressure?

step 1. Remove 2008 ZX10 engine
step 2. buy ANY year 1991-2004 ZX-7
step 3. wedge said engine into said chassis
step 4. race, steady chassis, win, smile

:rofl

jk...the ZX10 is MISSILE engine but that chassis is a LOT of work once up to speed (think sub 1:53's at Thill)

thanks for getting me...most dont..i own/run a m/c shop..not stuck in some PC correct world with a boss like Lumberg to report too..so yeah, why not have some fun?? I mean if your gonna have drinks on the beach..why not with a FEW hot local "tica's"??? lifes too short and my job is hella stressful inside the engine room and track so its fun to let loose some wise cracks...all in fun.

i got ran out of the GIXXER forum once for trying to explain cam timing... i had 3 guys go "thats not right" yet i somehow have won #1 plates, National Championships and GNF's with them...guess when i said try "take the intake, roll the lobe center down till it hits piston then just short shift it" they didnt like me??? hahaha...

I'm barely sub 2s at THill so it won't be a problem. :laughing

It's true. When Call coudln't get the thing working, you knew it wasn't a good bike. It was so bad, the top3 600 guys were faster in practice than his 10R....hence the reason he went Suzuki.

Yep, in 2009 Mike Sullivan one of the countries top racers for over 20 years was almost always faster on our ZX6 we built him than his ZX10 that made WELL over 60 more rwhp and PIR is all about hp too...thats bad!

last weekend when Olly Jervis's Zlock Racing ZX10 sbk was not going to be rebuilt in time for the race, he borrowed Sully's EDR ZX10 (had a season on it, plus all winters dust since Sully retired) and raced it...did well, but his best time was a 1:08.5 (on the ZX10)... while on his Zlock ZX6R (again well over 60rwhp less than the ZX10) was a 1:08.6

no way a bike with WELL over 195rwhp should only be .1 tenth faster at a track like PIR with a 1/2 mile long straight!! I know our race winning (olly got 2nd) ZX6R hit 166mph on GPS for trap speed into T1...the ZX10/GSXR1000's are hitting OVER 178mph...so its gotta be the twisty part no??

Fear not..rumor is the new ZX10 is finally, REALLY all new for 2011...lets hope they dust off the old school ZX-7RR chassis for it!

It was a tempting idea as I already have the bike in my garage (but unridden as it's a rebuild project) but I think that I'll shit can the idea.
