To V4 or not to V4 are Yamaha considering a radical change...

Interesting. They need more power for sure.

Fabio has been the lone lion able to be competitive. A different motor means chasis adjustment and the Yamaha chasis works really well.

Huge investment. I hope they pull the trigger and chase whatever is needed to get on a level playing ground.
 
The advantage of the inline four is always the bigger crankshaft, and the stability derived therefrom. Simply put, it's harder to upset and can allow more corner speed. The V4's are all "easier" to turn but less stable in the turn and less stable in braking as the chassis wants to rotate on the headstock. Thus the Yamaha corner speed. If Yamaha goes to a V4 it's going to take them three years to build one that works, I suspect.
 
I hope they hurry so I can ride the FJV Tracer and do roll-ons with the budman!

Yamaha sees the bigger I4 crankshaft as a disadvantage and they are
interested in the shorter V4 crank because it sports more advantages than a I4...

Yamaha spun the crankshaft backwards to offset the long I4
crankshafts gyroscopic procession and it's resistance to turning...
something the short forward spinning crank V4 does naturally...

Too bad the current engine rules/regs don't permit anything other than 4 cylinders (I think?). I miss the sound of the 5-cylinder Honda and 3-cylinder Aprilia RS-Cube. That bike was too far ahead of its time. The electronics they have now could tame the power and ride-by-wire to make it rideable.

Screw it--Yamaha should buck the trend and go for a 990cc single. Braaaaap! :ride
 
Suzuki proved that the i4 can produce more hp than the Yamaha is currently pumping out. Its not all upside with the v4 (handling) but obviously there are advantages. More power or more feel? Choices, choices….

Yamaha should try something different, like a very narrow angle V-4, many run on only 3 camshafts...

Morbidelli was a big surprise in Argentina. He actually made the Yamaha look fast for awhile. Fabio was floundering. Maybe there is life in the old dog yet.
