Total solar eclipse, 4/8/24

say: i’ll pass on to y’all photographers a "Quote" from a very good photographer.
"… When I look back at all the photos I took at eclipses, the ones of the sun don’t mean much to me. Photographs of the people watching the clips, these are the great ones that I enjoyed today.

A totally elixered shart ?

Been a while lets see if I remember how to post :afm199

Got to experience the tse of 2017 up in Stanley ID. Bucket list item no doubt, y'all should do at least one.

Some smart guy above here suggests to ditch the camera and chill..
Good advice. Getting high quality shots, especially if you are trying to capture any of the specific features (Bailey's beads, diamond ring etc) takes some gear and months of planning. And some very expensive repairs if ya mess up.

Check out the timelapse vid in my album here. The HDR piccy showing corona, earthshine and Regulus is my fav.

Nerdy shit over, seriously best way to experience is party party! But the sky has to co-operate. One cloud and you're buggered, so if the skies are variable or cannot be trusted get ready to move. I got lucky in '17 with skies, clear blue on the day, but was ready to pack the pier/mount/scope/camera/* up into jeep and go hunt for new spot if necessary. We did get lucky, cos 2hrs after the eclipse the wind changed and drove all the smoke from a nearby wildfire over us..

oblig psa. Do not look at the uneclipsed sun with binoculars, telescopes etc. You will destroy your retina. I discourage using bino's with mylar viewing glasses cos if anything slips it's only about a 100ms of exposure to burn the human retina...
During total eclipse absolutely use binoculars etc. You will see the sun edge on, just the photosphere. Prepare to feel humble.
but the best bit is all the human reaction, yeah, yeah big fat 'ol brains everyone has we all *know* what is happening. The little caveman inside is going fucking ballistic "THE SKY WENT OUT". lol.

go do it.
expect crowds.

I am headed for Texas next Wednesday, just over a week to get there sightseeing. A week at the daughters and headed back just after the eclipse. Good video below on the Eclipse posted below. I have the Solar Eclipse Timer downloaded to my phone.

timer is great idea! enjoy your trip Bill, bracketing the event around a trip is cool.. Waiting a day after the tse is a good idea also if you can, the road traffic around us after the eclipse was intense, everyone pulled up pegs and went home at the same time lol..

Yes the traffic will be BAD. I am hoping most of the traffic will be headed back to San Antonio. No big town to the west until you get to El Paso. I need to be back in Stockton for the Stockton Motorcycle Clubs 100 anniversary dinner. If not we would be staying an extra night.

I’m heading back west on the 9th too. I’ve heard all the warnings.

Lunt Solar is trustable:

btw glasses not essential to enjoying the totality. But it's fun watching the sun turning into pacman.. :cool

i think for those going y'all going to be in for a treat, more than 4 minutes of totality along the path in usa and a very active sun..
If you compare where we are now, entering maximum of solar cycle 25, versus 2017 you see a huge difference in solar activity. Which means a fuller corona and lots of prominences.

The thin foil type bags chips come in can be used to watch the eclipse.

I woulda assumed one would just put those on the ol' noggin' the keep the CIA from listening in, who knew?

Oh shit, good idea, I'm gonna be the coolest person at the KOA campground!

this is really cool

… Solar eclipses happen when the moon passes directly through the invisible line connecting the sun and Earth, something that doesn’t happen very often because space is big and the invisible line is skinny. Here’s a very not-to-scale diagram2 (to make it to scale, picture the sun being a basketball on one side of the basketball court, the Earth being a 2mm-diameter pebble on the other side of the court, and the moon being a small grain of sand about 7cm away from the pebble).

It is also very cool that earth has the only known full solar eclipse (surely there could be more with an infinity of chances) because our moon is 1/400th the size of the sun and also 1/400th as far away, thereby cancelling each other perfectly. dumb luck

I did not know that, just one more thing about our general existence that could have gone either way and never happened.
