Totally rando thought - what is level?

So I’m messing around with my laser level to hang some blinds in our living room. The thing shoots this beautiful red line across the entire length of the wall. So I eyeball the alignment of the line to the window casement and then notice the casement has a slight slope on it. The bubble level on the side of the gadget confirms that I’m just a p.h. out of level, the casement sloping consistently about 2mm across a 16 foot span of windows.

And then I start thinking - and this is the (really) rando part - about our ride in the Outback in Australia when we lived there, and going to Silverton. On that road there’s slight rise in an otherwise dead flat desert expanse. So flat, in fact, that when you’re on this little rise in the road you can literally see the curvature of the earth. (This spot was used in a scene from Mad Max).

So there I was in my living room with my laser level thinking about that rise in the Outback and the earth curving and my 2mm drop, and I start wondering that maybe the 2mm drop isn’t really a drop at all. Maybe it’s just that my living room is following the curvature of the earth. And if that were true (ok, let’s just admit that it isn’t), then what is a straight line anyways? I mean, that line from laser was for sure dead straight. And the lines in my house are good and straight, too. Or are they? Maybe there’s no such thing as a straight line on earth because really they’re either all tangential, and therefore never square; or they’re all plumb and square, but they’re never straight.

They didn’t cover this very well in geometry - and I sucked at that anyways.

That’s a big window. But if you had a level or a steel straight edge that long, you’d never be able to use it to create a flat surface or a straight line, would you?
 
Well, like you're saying, level is imaginary. What level refers to is the perpendicularity of the line relative to the gravitational center of the earth. The air bubble wants to go up, the opposite direction of gravity, and so what is exactly level in any one place in the world is not going to be exactly level in any other place in the world.

Over a 16-foot span, the elevation drop due to the curvature of the Earth is 7.35 × 10⁻⁵ inches (or about 0.0000735 inches).
To put this in perspective, this drop is 0.0018 millimeters—which is roughly 1/50th the thickness of a single human hair.

How much had you smoked before hanging your blinds?

I too have a level picture frame in my place that clearly shows the corner where the ceiling meets the wall is definitely not level. I triple checked the bubble level when I was hanging it too my reaction was not as deep and more of a :wtf

On the electronics forum, we were experimenting with Chinese spirit level vials. We implemented a differential capacitive measurement by creating three nodes on the glass vial using copper tape. Once was across the bottom half (common node), and the top half was split to create two differential pairs. The capacitors were placed into circuit and excited with a multivibrator circuit with output fed into a differential charge amplifier and analyzed using a microprocessor. The effect is caused by changing dielectric due to the air bubble moving from one active plate to the other.

The result was 1000x increase in sensitivity relative to physical markings on the vial. Folks were reporting a change in their garage floor level when a car would be parked outside, or they would just walk near the device.

Level is perpendicular to a geoid. Varies within a county, especially as it approaches mountains or rivers.
Home construction is perpendicular and parallel to geoids, not the center of mass of the earth which generally applies to larger infrastructure projects for horizontal positioning :nerd

What are the criteria for “larger?” Mass? Area? Footprint? Height?
