I'm turning my 07 YZ250F into a SM besides a wheel set what would you guys recommend?

I'll be going for a set of Warp9 wheels (unless someone can point me in a better direction)? What should I do as far as suspension?

Thanks guys! :thumbup

Build your own wheels. Warp9 has some QC issues. buchannan spokes stock hubs and a decent rim should do it. Behr, Excel, Sun and a few others are good. If you want a dirt set still find anotehr set of stick hubs.

Brakes: caliper relocation bracket and bigger rotor. There's a variety of ways to do it but I might start there depending on how SM specific you want.

Sliders: axle, peg, bars.

Suspension wise a bit stiffer and then tailor to you.

Tires: Race or trackday/hooligan?
Race- slicks
holligan/fun- something like a contiattack or whatever you like in the size you need.

4.25" Rear wheel do a 150
5" doa 160 unless you run slicks. they're profiles will ahve you run some different sizs.

Check with Brok ... He can get you DNA Racing wheels and those are really really good.

And, do use a 5" rear rim. There are many tire options. There is a great writeup on Barf & on SMJ on how to make a 5" fit with tires. I use a Michellin supermoto slick on DNA Racing 5".

Brakes : You will be fine on the stock front brakes, but keep looking for a Motomaster setup. They pop up quite often on SMJ, typically around the 300-400$ range for rotor + caliper + front steel line.

Suspension : Send it to Bucky (Buck Gerolamy). He is @ Sacramento area. ask anyone riding SMUSA and Buck's the man. Plus, he is very affordable.

Sliders : They are a must at most tracks, axles & handlebars you can diy them with threaded rod + skateboard wheels.

Catch All : Catch cans for all fluids are needed. Engine breather hose need to be contained. {dont just shove the pipe into a container, as it needs to breathe}

* Assuming this is not a street legal bike and track only

All very good info, thanks guys! :thumbup

My $.02: 5" is overkill for a 250. You will be adding a lot of weight.
Warp9 does not have quality issues anymore. It was true 5 years ago maybe but they are doing a lot better (they have wheels running the Baja!).

Unless you plan on racing it, I would recommend just doing a sportsman setup with braided front brake line. Even you plan on racing it actually (unless you plan on racing with the experts).

What you need vs what you will end up wanting is interesting.

id rock the wheelset and get slidered up and find your needs after you rider her for a bit.

and 5" is too big imo

This. Suspension and brakes before kewl wheels. :) You can go fast on a sportsman setup. An EBC oversized front rotor (+ the aforementioned better line) is a cheap way to improve the braking before you go for the proper Motomaster shizz.

Agree with the sportsman setup, but do not agree that a 5" rim is bigger or lot heavier for a 250. (I mean, at a novice or even intermediate pace, the weight difference is negligible).

I spoke to many SMUSA expert racers, and almost all of them voted for a 5" & atleast on the YZ, 5" rim has no clearance issues. (maybe the CRFs have a problem). Morever, 5" rims are available more frequent in the used market, with abundance of 160 take offs, which makes the TCO lucrative. Infact, i started with the 4.25" and moved to a 5" and will not move back.

Agree on all the great advice above.

When / if you do go to 17" wheels check craiglist and supermotojunkie.com for used wheel sets. I believe Yamaha 250 and 450 (either YZ-F or WR-F) were interchangeable from 2002-2008 or later. There are plenty of good deals on wheels.

Most important is $$'s spent on track time.
