SEG rider crashes while escorting Prince Harry through London.

If you don't know much about SEG (why would ya?) you might enjoy the video below that shows how they work. They escort Royal family, politicians, visiting heads of state and so on, mainly on the streets of London. They are unarmed and don't have sirens on their bikes (just blue lights). There are usually three riders and the objective is to keep the convoy moving at all costs (no small feat in Central London). Two were badly injured once when they used their bikes to block an oncoming car that they thought was attacking the visiting dignitary, although the attack turned out to be a myopic old dude.

Brave guys, excellent bikers. Get well soon to the downed rider.

of course it was a prius! Damn right (left over here) turners.

Hopefully the rider isn't hurt too badly, heal quickly.
 
Damn right about the Prius drivers. Bloody idiots. They might be vegetarian save the world types but they seem happy to feck up a few bikers with little or no remorce - same in the UK and here!
 
We have had a number of motor officers killed over the years doing VIP escorts. Most recent one I can recall was in Hawaii when Obama visited a couple years ago. Keeping a motorcade moving at speed can be dangerous. Some motor instructors in the Sacramento area have developed a great training program to try to get all motor officers on the same page when doing escorts. Serious problems occur when mixing officers from various agencies who may train in different ways for escorts.

That is sad. I think the UK SEG operating model is quite a bit safer. This latest incident is rare and the outcome would not be a fatality. The VIP car (sometimes a convoy and occasionally a vehicle with armed officers) travels slower - around 20 MPH through urban areas. So the bikers are constantly leap frogging but they are not having to ride at speeds that would cause fatalities. You can see even in this recent case the cop only "flew" a few feet and his injuries are not life threatening - I understand he has already been discharged from hospital.

Interestingly the accident happened at an "uncontrolled junction". They take on a bit more risk in using smaller teams of riders presumably to avoid the massive convoys we are more used to seeing in the States.

I'm British, drive a Prius, (and a V8 truck + 6000# trailer) and ride a Ducati and I'm not a bloody idiot or a vegetarian.
