I'm amazed no one has started a thread on it yet. So how does every one feel about them not granting any more extensions at all now. Here is a link to a news video about it
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/vp/37913067#37913067

Personally I think it is going to do a lot of harm to the already jacked up economy

personally im all for unemployement and other social safety nets, but at what pot do we call it quits on extensions. it isnt meant to be a long term thing, just something to keep ya afloat. but eventually it has to end.

when we reach a point that there is work available for those who seek it. We aren't close to being there yet.

Yea I agree with you. I'm sure there are people abusing the system, but this is going to hurt a lot of people who are just trying to get by while they try and find a job. To stimulate an economy you need to have money. How are people going to support business if they don't have money. Some of the comments by the republicans in the video really pissed me off. Comparing the unemployed to stray animals and hobos.

How can people be abusing the system if nobody is hiring?

I am for unemployment too, 1 of the very few government programs I support.
I got laid off from my main job in April and am only getting $880 every 2 weeks, 1/2 of what I was getting while working.
I am rushing to find another job just so I can collect partial unemployment so my aloted
money does't run out so fast.
If I can't find another job my aloted money runs out in... October I think, and I can't reapply 'til may of 2011

i dont think we are going to reach that point completely. lets face the facts, the last 10+ years economy was basd on debt tp such a degree that it rose out of control. the economy wil never get back to what it was, at least not in the next decade. cause it was a fake economy based on consumption that outpaced earnings to a massive degree. some of these jobs just arent comming back.

there IS jobs, i see now hiring signs all the time, the problem is that people arent willing to face that not all the same jobs are comming back, and people need to move out of their old fields and into new ones. and that may mean less appealing jobs

i think unemplyement should at this point be changed to some sort of government work. we need something tangible to show for all this money being spent. start fixing roads, clearing fields, whatever. put these people to WORK.

There aren't jobs. They're not coming back.

Companies are counting on things being bad enough that their existing employees can't go anywhere, and will put up with doing two-three people's jobs.

As for a UI extension, well, if you want free money, become a banker. Otherwise, bend over for those that already are bankers. :laughing Sucks, but that's life.

More serious suggestion, can I suggest moving out of CA if you're likely to be long term unemployed? Job prospects may be worse elsewhere but your cost of living is a hell of a lot lower.

Just so long as you haven't been forced to downgrade, that's all that matters.

I've already lost a lot, and I'm about to lose the rest. Because we as a society didn't think it was important to protect our manufacturing base.

BS. if theres a job out there and you dont want it cause the $$ isnt what you want, thats YUR problem not mine, and it shouldnt be the taxpayers either. I think unemplyement insurance is essential and great but it isnt designed to keep you afloat while you look for a job you like and fits the lifestyle you want to live. its to keep you from starving and living on the streets. its to keep you feeding your kids and a roof over your head. thats why its called insurance.

if you have to downgrade and live in a crappy apt, well thats what it is

edit, im not talking YOU specificaly but just people as a whole

Too bad it being used as political fodder. Elections coming up in November, this will be brought up in discussions.

The extensions are financed by more deficit spending. Republicans are making a stand on any more deficit spending. If the Democrats would allow the Republicans to amend the bill. Finance it through existing federal budget it would be OK by them.
Its perfectly doable but this is becoming a political football to make Republicans look bad.

Same thing happened with Katrina emergency aide. It was more important to the Democrats to make political hay. Putting the emergency aide in the military spending bills with war deadline attached. Now ask anyone in Louisiana about emergency money they have never gotten. Why their voting for Republicans.

This is another example how Democrats hold innocents hostage for purely political reasons.

exactly. too many people get used to what they have, and won't budge on living beneath those means. Please! :hand work is work, and living is living. downgrading while getting back on ones feet is a lost concept, which many times is necessary. :teeth

Strictly speaking, it's not supposed to be tax money, but the states have allowed employer's contribution rates to the UI fund to remain too low. When things are good, they allow UI to go rather underfunded, and when the shit hits the fan, the taxpayers eat it.

Rather than constantly backstopping it with tax money, we should be raising the contribution rates of those employers that have laid off the most people, and those that refuse to consider qualified candidates that are unemployed.

this, it sucks if you have to move from the nice 3 bedroom house with a yard and your new prius to a two bed apt and a 89 civic, but its life. and not a bad one.
the obsession with "things" and having stuff is what got us here in the first place

Isn't UI 18 months? So then, 18 months of looking for a job, any job, and people can't find anything?

I think it's like 12 + 6 actually, but don't quote me on that. Or 6+6+6. Something like that.
