Hoping someone can help. I received a ticket for a broken windshield at the end of summer. This was an excellent incentive to take my little van off the road and begin the restoration process I've been planning for a year.

I went to DMV to put the van on non-op status and they said they can't do that while the registratioin is current :wtf so I've continued to keep the van insured even though it is in pieces to avoid getting my registration suspended.

Here's the problem, the van is still not ready for road use, I have the windshield taped in place but I really don't want to drive it anywhere until all the repairs are complete and the windshield can be properly installed.

Is there any way to extend a fix it ticket or is there an independent service for getting the ticket signed off since technically the windshield has been replaced? I don't believe LEOs make house calls for this sort of thing but the clock is ticking.

TL;DR. Broken windshield fixit ticket, can't drive vehicle anywhere to get ticket signed off.

I don't know if its the same now but back in the day any police officer could sign off a fix it ticket so if you have a friend on the force somewhere you could just have them sign it off.

Seems like a big ask. I'll see if I have any San Rafael friends that can help. I may have to go to court to have it extended.

Try calling your local jurisdiction and explain that the vehicle is not currently operable, but the issue has been fixed and you'd like the ticket signed off. They might just come to your residence to do so.

Keep in mind that some agencies chage a fee (usually $25) to sign off a ticket, especially if that ticket was written by a different agency. If that is the case, it would be in addition to the $25 that the court will charge when proof of correction is submitted. If your local agency will make a house call, but also charges, you might have to go to their station and pay the fee first, and then they'd send someone out.

Each agency will vary slightly on how they will handle these, but what I have described is how my department does things. Normally we don't make house calls for that, but we'll make exceptions in cases like this.

THANK YOU!!!! I'll ask in person.

Thanks Bojangle, SRPD came by last week. I called Solono Traffic and they said extended the ticket date.

Now the hard part begins but fixing up this little van will be a great project.

I think the DMV is wrong saying you can't Non Op the van while its currently registered. Makes absolutely no sense

Mad

I had recently paid the registration and was told I would have to wait for renewal to Non-Op it.

DMV is correct that you need the wait till the next renewal period to file a Planned Non-operation (PNO).

What you can do now to avoid paying for needless insurance is to file an Affidavit of non-use (https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/affidavit-of-non-use/). This will prevent registration suspension. If the vehicle is still not ready by the time reg renewal comes up, you can file PNO then.

Thank you!!
It would be helpful for them to pass that information along while a person is standing there.

How did you get a ticket for a cracked windshield? Were you stopped for another violation?

Asking for a friend... my truck's windshield has 2 major cracks on it running pretty much across the whole thing. It's a huge POS anyway and I'm waiting for car prices to drop before scrapping it.

I b liege I was initially pulled for driving with a very sexy enduro on the back when the sun shined through the van. The fact that the car windshield was dirty accented the degree of crackedness :laughing

Really, that officer had the option of writing a lot more than the windshield, I consider myself lucky.
