Up'ing the Quest to 275

Takes some F'in stones to go 195mph + in dirt. Way to go Papi!

on dirt no less; think what it could have been on pavement! :wow

Congratulations; well done, well done. :thumbup

Thing brings up an interesting point...

Papi, is there any telemetry for tire readings? Do you know if the rear losses traction (aside from audible engine change).... ?

5/20/13 Update

Home and unpacked. Tired, but very very Happy. :party

As Connie posted up for us, we ran 4 rounds between Sat and Sun.

Round 1 - This was my first time back on the bike since SpeedWeek in August 2012. I really needed to shake her down, as I had no idea what to expect since the rebuild. I have a lot of trepidation's on the first pass. I try to just stay focused on getting through it in one piece, while staying hyper-focused on a jillion "what-ifs" should something go wrong after 175MPH. I launched fairly strong, ran her up to 10k RPM's in each shift and she ran like a dream. Blew through the lights at 182MPH+ change. Regained my confidence, ready now. This was also the fastest first pass (shakedown) I have ever run at El Mirage.

Round 2 - Temp went up, as did the DA, nice SW wind producing free horsepower. Launched out a bit harder, blew a shift (3rd to 4th) about 1/2 way down the mile. Stayed in it, 190.3MPH through the lights. This was 1.5MPH under the Record in Class we set in 2010. So now I just gained about 198 Points out of 200. I couldn't be happier. SCTA is as much a points race as it is a Record event. We all run for points to get better starting positions and be in the Top25 of the year. I was in 2010 #23, but lost all points in 2011/2012 as I scuttled the program to take care of my Mom.

Round 3 - Sunday AM - Air is cool, new lane set up. DA good, wind again blowing at our backs. Saturday night I sent data to the wizard who told me everything I did wrong in rounds 1 & 2 :laughing, so with his marching orders in my head, I was focused on throwing the hammer down. We got up to the line and I slammed it harder than I ever had. My body geometry was a little off though, and I blew the 4th to 5th shift a bit, but the bike felt good. 190.6MPH, up 3/10. I'm at a solid 198 points now, and I told the girls we had a great weekend, we did a great job and we can go home. We still have the 1650 Production Record, all is good. I told them if they give us a 4th Round, it's no biggie, we came and accomplished what I wanted. If we do the 4th Round, all the pressure is already off me because we gained good solid points at the opening event.

Round 4 - Final round for us
The temp is now way up, as is the DA. Air is getting thinner, which means no beuno for the NA motor. But I'm super relaxed, super happy. It's been a great weekend hanging with our buddies, seeing living legends and just a real nice time for me. It takes a while to cycle through the end of Round 3 vehicles already staged and in their lanes. we just kick it in pre-stage for a bit until they move us up to staging. I pick lane 3 again, the dirt feels best on the right side of the racing lane, nearest the cones. We get up to the line, do our little ritual and the SCTA Pres walks over and wishes me good luck on our final pass. For some reason, I am super mellow on the line. Just thinking of twisting the throttle so I can launch hard. The Starter gives me the all clear, I set my launch at about 5000RPMS and slide the clutch out, off we go. But this time I ran her like a drag bike - F'n hard with no mercy. I chattered the clutch a bit on the launch which was a first for me, but she spooled up fast and hard...

a little violent up to 3rd, then smoothed right out after 150MPH. By mid course I knew she felt right. I tried to stay as much WFO as possible without smoking the tire to hard. Then from 3rd to 4th, she wouldn't let up on the dogs, and jammed up a bit, causing me to overshift into 5th directly from 3rd. I lost about 5k RPMS, so I went WFO not caring if I spun up the tire at this point. 6th gear came fast, I rolled back into WFO and she spooled up to 11kRPMs effortlessly. My BP was better as well, I had very little drag on my body past the 1/2 mile.

And just like that, without me even knowing speed, the run was over, I scuttled speed and turned her off as prescribed onto the return lane and waited for our chase truck and crew. I dismounted the bike, took off my helmet and gloves, watched Jim Hoogerhyde make a pass, Valerie Thompson and a few others. I was happy and content, and ready to go home. I see the chase truck in the distance, so I begin getting ready to load the bike. They spun the rig around me, no emotion on their face, so I figured the pass was probably just OK. The stop the truck in front of me, and all of the sudden burst out of the doors screaming and yelling as they charge toward me. I'm thinking; "wtf is up with these crazy women" when they throw a group hug around me and start congratulating me. Now I still dont know whats going on. I'm thinking their just happy we're going home. They then ask me if an official has been over to see me yet, and in my head I'm thinking oh great, I must have dumped some part on the race course or something. I told them no, nobody has seen me yet. Then they say the sweetest words I have hear in almost 3 years; "You just broke the Record again - You did 195.307".

I wont lie, I teared up. It's been such a long hard journey, that little moments like these don't come very often in ones life. But the whole weekend for me was filled with magic. And a little bit of that magic was sprinkled onto me and the bike, in Round 4 at El Mirage on Sunday. We are once again the Top Speed Record Holders in 1650 Production aboard the mighty ZX14 in the SCTA @ El Mirage's Dirty Mile.

Here's Brittany and I moments after they broke the news to me. That little girl worked her ass off to get here, she deserves that record as much as the team. And if you look close, you'll see I found my smile again. It came back Sunday after 6 months of being on hiatus.

Everyone involved over these past weeks has really made all the difference and kept me from quitting in the 11th hour when a million things went wrong the last couple weeks. I feel very lucky to have good friends who keep me propped up and moving forward. I'm also extremely lucky to be given the chance to experience this adventure.

And last, without a doubt, none of this would be possible without the support of great sponsors and vendors;
Jeff Viets/Bridgestone Racing Tires, ERC Fuels, Eddie and Kevin @ Fremont Kawasaki, Bob Wirth, and all our volunteers who keep coming back for brutal long days and punishment keeping me two wheels down. Thanks again all of you.

So where do go next?

Well, we have to get back to SoCal next weekend for our motor to measured up by an SCTA Official. This is part of the Record process, as our motor was not pre-measured/sealed prior.

Then after that, quick bike inspection, cleaning, fluid changes, etc, and off to the June meet to put another bump on our fastest in the mile if we can.

We also are deep into the Blown Fuel bike, and rebuilding Willie's Wheels. So it's possible come June/July, we are running two bikes, then three shortly after. I cant wait for blown fuel. My dream of 275MPH is getting closer and closer now.

tell us more about his contribution, please & thanks

We do not use any wheel speed indicators on the production bike. I can feel it when she spins up, so I temper it with the right hand. We may or may not use it on the blown fuel bike. I'm not a big fan of "traction" control in LSR, I think it takes away from the purity of the sport. It's not illegal though to run in Modified and above. Just not my thing, that's all.

You can see in the picture above, coming off the starting line that I have a lot of spin. I launched really hard in Rounds 3 & 4, no different than a drag really, sans the burnout.

The wizard? Build, test, tune. You looking to have him do something for you? Get in line, he's busy. Wait a year (or two). Win. PM me for more.

Right, I figured as much. Personally I'm not a fan of traction control. Just don't be an idiot and a "loose rear" won't kill you. I was pretty much dead figured on it not being allowed. But the info could be interesting to see if you have wheel spin or lift, and just can't plain out feel it.

I've never been in your seat, on dirt. I've hit 167 on pavement, and that's about enough for me. You've got some big balls, and some amazing family and friends.

Congrats on yet another record for you and your crew!!!! :thumbup

Awesome !!!!
:thumbup P :thumbup A :thumbup P :thumbup I :thumbup

To the young lady too!! Way to go.

So stoked for you coming off an emotional period and a tough struggle to get it done.
You did good man. I am sure mom is smiling from above. Not because of the record....because you chose to stand up, pursue, endure and live life your way.

Respect. Can't wait to buy you a well deserved adult beverage. :Port

Awesome job Papi, congrats on making all the hard work pay off, you and team shooting star rock it indeed!

5/25/13 Update

We were allowed 30 Days after our Record run last Sunday to get the motor measured by an SCTA Official in order for the record to be certified. Usually we do this before the start of the season, which entails getting the bike to an inspector prior for verification of class, and a seal is applied to the motor good for the season. Well life didn't work out that way for me in the previous months, and we barely made it to the first event last weekend.

So, without hesitation, and a temp seal applied on Sunday to our motor, we loaded up the bike and drove to SoCal at O Dark Thirty this morning to meet up with an Inspector to get measured and officially sealed.

As expected, all went very well. The motor measured well within class, the bike was to spec on all other aspects including fuel taken last week, and we were officially signed off today for the Production Record. This was week two of great news, and I am just happy as can be.

How could it get any better than this you ask? Well after inspection and our paperwork was signed off, we stopped by to see fellow LSR racer and motorsports giant Danny Thompson (son of the late great Mickey Thompson) and his shop and home of ThompsonLSR and the Challenger2. The Challenger 2 is a resurrection of Mickey's Top Speed LSR Streamliner that Danny is rebuilding. It is a gorgeous machine, from tip to tail. Danny was a gracious host, and knew we were on a drive in and drive out of LA, so he shuffled his schedule for our visit today. I watched Danny in 2010 go airborne at Bonneville in a record setting Mustang over 200MPH right after my run. He walked away unscathed and we are sure happy to still have him around.

It was a long day driving from Morgan Hill to LA and back. But with Record Cert in hand, it's time to spool up our effort for June's race and get another Top Speed record under our belt. I cant wait to get back to El Mirage and go faster in the dirt. Shooting for 197 now in Production. Our points from the first race will bump our starting position a lot. This gets us faster off the line earlier in the morning, very important in the summer when we need all the cool thick air we can get!! With each baby step victory, I become more and more excited to run our blown fuel bike to 275MPH. I cant wait.

Thank you again to the barf family for all your positive support this past year on our quest. All your postive comments are very much appreciated!

And we're all proud of BARF's fastest member!!! :thumbup

You are something, Papi. :thumbup Congratulations on the BIG payoff for all the time, effort, and dough. Thank you for sharing your passion with us.

I believe I ran in some events with Danny, way the hell back in time. And I knew his dad from some public relations stuff.

275 just ahead.
