Used Bike Purchase Tips

I wanna know where Alan gets the time to write all that he does.

On the other hand, if nothing is found wrong with the bike, then you now have good reason to stick to your price. It can work for you if you have disclosed issues up front, against you if you are hiding something or didn't even know about it.

That's true, but trust me, they'll find something, somewhere, somehow. "Well the brake pads are only at 75%....the valves are due in another 1K miles...the chain is a year old".

I shit you not. The worst part is getting the bike to the place to be inspected, though. Mobile inspections, fine...go right ahead.

If there is something close to being worn out or mechanically questionable, what's wrong with identifying it beforehand?? Maybe that bike is as strong as the seller thinks it is and maybe it isn't. The truth hurts sometimes.

I've got no problems with buyers inspecting. It does become irritating when they use such results as reasons to "negotiate" the price. All the while, the next seller the get to won't take the bike anywhere to be inspected and thus, it's an unequal game.

Ignorance is bliss. The stuff I sell is no more than 2 years old...etc etc. That's all. Inspections are great for buyers, a pain in the ass for sellers. If the inspection is done on site, that's fair game.

Did. Now it's just cars when we're done with them...which is about every 6 months or so.

One other thing: see what the tires look like...

EG, I believe an SV should have a set of well thrashed Pilot Powers. But you want to BUY your SV from the one with the clapped-out, ridden square touring tires.

Nice post Alan, and as far as inspections i think it's more useful for the newer riders, as us older riders have a better idea what to look for.
