My 92 honda vfr backfires on decel. I tuned it up about two months ago. I rode with the choke on for 15 minutes a few times and ever since it has backfired on hard decel. How do I fix this problem?

1st check your exhaust for any leaks ,

2nd make a call to a mechanic & see if maybe your valves need adjusting

and c, go to the newbie section and introduce yourself for a proper welcome

Popping on decel sometimes is related to a lean condition. This can be caused by an air leak in the intake portion of the system -- the rubber manifolds that connect the carbs to the airbox and the engine sometimes are loose or the rubber may have small splits that leak air.

Gummy carbs also can exhibit this behavior. If the pilot jet gets clogged, you will also get a lean condition on closed throttle. This jet has an extremely thin hole and gum/varnish/debris can clog this easily.

1st check the fitment of the carb clamps and make sure the rubber fittings are in good shape. Next, clean the pilot circuit and make sure the pilot air bleed screws are at the correct setting (usually around 2 turns out).

If that doesn't solve the problem, check valve clearances.

easiest thing to do as always: change plugs and evaluate running condition, e'g' black plugs= rich, whitish plugs= lean, crusty plugs= uses oil, change plugs. Tan color= runs good carburetion wise, might need mixture screws adjusted

TLRs are known for backfiring under decel. ask max smiley, he saw flames shooting out 1 time. :D usually around the 4.5k RPM range (out of 10.5k top).

anyway, it was a couple of things that contributed:

1. PAIR valve (emmission control box)
2. rear exhaust seal spiggot was leaking.

most peeps that removed these 2 saw little if any backfiring. my TL still does it occasionally though not as much after i got it remapped. i rarely go down to 4.5k RPM anymore so that might also contribute.

huh.

i have a similar problem with my 86 VFR 750. the carbs turned out to be fine (mechanic checked/serviced them for me), but it could well be valve clearance.
