These things are pricey! Seen a few on CL for $1,500 to $3k.

There are DIY kits for $300 minus wood.

I've been offered a 20 year old original Murphy Bed in excellent shape for $160. I would then built a box/cabinet to house it. Not sure if $160 work the old coil spring design is worth it.

There are cheap alternatives, Moddi Bed and Lori Bed but don't look nearly as nice.

Put a lock and hasp on the bottom so you can fold it up and lock people in.

Don't forget a strap across the bed to keep them in place when you fold it up. My bro folding our sister up.

Minus wood- sounds like a Dubstory...:laughing

How about a futon?

Ryan- What friend are you moving in?

Brother inlaws cousin is here on a 6 month contract. Staying at my place for at least a month. Always wanted to make more room and don't use it as an office anyway.

Got a futon ill sell if I build the Murphy bed.

This isn't going to end well, is it :rofl

It would be like a 1960's sitcom with a Murphy Bed...

I'd get the used Murphy bed for 160 and build the cab around it. Even if the springs are shot (they used to make stuff sturdier back in the day) you can get a new replacement set and be in good shape. You might look at IKEA for ready-made cab's that would work for your purpose. Wood, even veneers, aren't cheap. IKEA hackers is a cool website that has a gazillion fun/funky projects for DIYers with a creative streak using (you guessed it) IKEA stuff and chopping it up a little.
