Washing machine refurbishment

I’m on my second LG fridge. The first one died after more than ten years of use.

I recall reading the shit state of current models are due to DOE government regulations on water consumption and energy. Having neutered the hardware, government agencies are of course exempt.

Well, the energy efficiency rules are certainly why the base and eco settings don't actually clean your clothes. But of course the way around that, is to just use the "heavy duty" setting. I don't think government regulations explain why the actual parts don't last very long. That can only be due to poor quality and planned obsolescence.

I have an old Maytag washer that I purchased N in Berkeley, at Whole Earth Access/ which is long gone. …@ 29yrs contacts wore out in the timer. I purchased a new timer and installed about a year ago. all is good. I do miss that store.

Whole Earth Access was a countercultural retail store in Berkeley, California, founded in 1969, offering products like books, woodstoves, and power tools. It expanded to seven Northern California locations by the early 1990s but filed for bankruptcy in 1996, leading to the closure of all stores, including the Berkeley location, by 1998.

I think I bought my first computer at a Whole Earth store in Menlo Park.

I see you lifted from the wiki. There was this tidbit too
The first store, located in an industrial area of Berkeley, sold various brand names sought after by young affluents at a discounted price.
Doesn't sound very "counterculture" to me
