weight on foot pegs

Are you able to discern a difference where they have the bike pointed and where they pick up the throttle to where you do?

Remember; entries are the last thing to master. Get the exits perfect first, IMO. I can do 95% of my best lap with my best exits and not pushing entries at all (easy, relaxed, slow). Those apex speeds are a moment in time. As Robert's pointing to; take entry and exits into account as well.

One more thing: T11 Sonoma; slow turns are the last place to make up time on entry. Fast turns are the difference between front runners and mid pack riders.

Oh yeah big time they are pointed and on gas when I’m still on the brakes

In order to get the good exit I need to fix my entry (by not pushing it, take it easy, relaxed, etc) this means I need to slow down more before tipping in!

Smash, i did some drills 2 years ago only working on exits... never shifting past 2nd/3rd gear at Thill and went from 2:13 down to 2:08s only working on not having lazy entry (mostly fading in) and having perfect exits. Entrys were so easy and lazy it was easy to surprising at how much time i gained while only riding at 6/7 tenths, compared to before at 2:13s i was riding "fast" and "hard" killing myself trying to go faster.

From then on time just kept on melting and I've always focused on making sure my bike is always where i want it to be ("off" line maneuver) or where it needs to be for the turn (how was my turn in? Was it lazy? Did i use all the track? did i make my apex? Was i pushing? Did my exit use all the track? Did i have room more/earlier acceleration? Did i have to roll off or was i able to stay in it?)

Have you gone to a school? :) One thing i realized is that reading and listening and understanding is one thing, but to have someone come and say "yeah, you're doing that wrong" or "thats close but not quite" is another thing and IMO you need both unless you're born with all the extra talent they forgot to give to the rest of us.

GPS lap timers are the standard now because they just work the AiM Solo2 is a solid choice.

Thats a solid piece of equipment alright....The DL version has some outstanding bike feedback. If money is not a problem that smartycam just takes that product to the next level. But at a cost of $1700 for the two I might sleep on it.

The normal $399 version will do what i want in terms of consistency but dang the additional ECU connection on the DL would be a great investment for someone wanting to get deeper into racing. And honestly im not sure that i dont want to....

Think I might do this school im signed up for and figure out how much I want to invest into this...

Thanks for the information, I had no idea this kind of software was available...

In the two years of riding on track I’ve yet to take a school, but I’ve always wanted to attend Rickdiculous or CSS or something similar. Dave Stanton has been a huge resource, and Ken Hills podcast series has helped as well. Maybe I will be able to swing it this year, but it’s hard to trade a track weekend or two for one or two days.

Since getting the bmw hp data logger I’ve discovered that I am very good at lying to myself :laughing

Stanton is your best resource around...5X #1 plate, cool leathers, etc.

My advice Chris (and take it for what you will) is work the problem backwards: exit/ mid corner/ entry.

My first weekend of the season is with PTT 2/23, 2/24 at Sonoma. I will focus on nailing the exits first and then pick up the mid corner and entry speeds. Thanks Berto :)

Ill be heading down there as well....

How is this place for RV's?

Plenty of space, not sure about hookups. See you there :ride

My first time there, ill be riding B Group....Either a blue Gixer #148 or red/yellow/black ZX10R #619

Yes Please come say Hi if you see me and ill do the same. Be nice to have someone around that I actually i have spoken with...

Is there an enforced sound restriction there?

I’ll be in B group as well, will keep an eye out!

It’s reasonable, I have full exhaust and fuel controller and my bike is pretty darn loud and haven’t had any issues :ride well at least with sound :laughing

You are running 1:48s at Sonoma and are going in B group? Why do you want to sandbag and make everyone else there uncomfortable with passing speeds? Think about that. Trackdays aren't afm practices.

There are sound limits, and I have been busted at Sonoma for exceeding them. The booth is on the front straight at the grandstands.

I don’t anticipate running the same pace as an AFM practice as I haven’t ridden for six months since crashing and I will be focusing on my exits. I’m aware that it’s a track day and adjust my passing speeds accordingly :)

OK, just basically saying that you are going to be surrounded by people going much slower than you, taking weird lines, chopping throttles and overbraking, and generally occupying areas of the track that nobody should. A group is much safer and more fun, and you can easily go A group pace. But you'll find out. :laughing

running really far off of race pace is wasted track time for a racer looking to improve. theres little sense in reinforcing anything about going slow such as markers, lines, and even the sensation of speed. for me, I need to be within 3sec of my PR to learn anything.

nearly anyone can get on the gas at the right time when their apex speed is 5mph down from where it should be. exits when u have enough apex speed is the hard part. and all that means your lap times cant be that slow.

sign up for A-group. ull have a better day.

Anytime Chris. I hope to see you out there (at around noon, when I arrive for the day).

Funny..Jere Starks showed me exactly where the sound station is and told me "don't tell anyone...". It's kinda in the area you mentioned and kinda not!

Working up to your speeds is a good idea, but don't get caught thinking you need to backwards. You'll be fine in A group and the concepts will come back to you quickly. I know a guy who didn't race for 3 years and had the same trepidation this year. He won some stuff...

Chris has decent experience at A group speeds, Ernie..and I agree with you, he should be in A group, even if working on concepts. It won't be that fast of an A group.

Having seen you ride (and ridden with you), I agree with this, Chris. You'll be fine. I think I'm gonna come ride with Earnest and the guys too that weekend so if you want, we can go spin some laps.

Good advice for me! I love braking hard and late and I notice that the harder I brake the less ability I have to judge my speed when letting out the brakes and sometimes I wont have any trail braking into apex cause i used to much on entry. For some reason my speed judgement is far better when i brake lighter and carry that into apex.

This is a good observation. Nearly everyone is affected by this to some extent but it's relatively rare that a rider notices the correlation on their own.

The brakes are the most powerful control on the bike and will at times be the most distracting. The best way I know of to keep high brake forces from fooling you into thinking you're going faster than you are is progressive desensitization.

Taken to the extreme, try riding a session without braking or shifting. If you can't or won't do that, minimize use of the brakes as best you can. You will be able to sneak up on your best corner speed without the distraction of high braking forces. Once you're calibrated, begin using the brakes lightly. As the day wears on, increase braking force. Assuming yoiu have a reference point or location for where you want the brakes fully released, you'll need to move your begin braking marker deeper as you brake harder.

As Berto suggests, pay attention to the rate at which you apply and release the brakes. They don't need much time to apply fully; the weight transfer to the front only takes about a half second. The rate at which you release the brakes will determine how accurately you can establish entry speed and line.

Jere's a cool dude. I've always been glad to know him. Yeah I know Chris should be in A group, he's either dreaming about wanting to pass lots of people ( which he will in B group) or doesn't want to get passed a lot, which he won't in A group.

Cold Sears Point in February? That track is gonna be slippery and damp, and the first session will see T2 crashes. :laughing

Shit, if all you fast guys are gonna be there, I might show up for fun and games. Sat or Sun or both?

He said he'd be there rain or shine.

I told him to send me the video he'll be taking of the flowers on the outside of T2 if it's drizzling.
