I like the statement "Ride smart today, ride again tomorrow". This is a very meaningfully website that may already save a lot of bikers' life. Keep going, man.

🏍️ Motorcycle Mistakes Log – Before & After

PaulR

Mistake # 1

Date/Year: 1975

Location/Context: Novato / Learning to Ride

🚦 Before

• Situation: I received just basic instructions from a friend to operate the bike.

• What Wrong: I crashed often both low sides and sometimes high sides.

• Consequence: This was in the dirt on a Honda 100 so mostly scrapes and bruises due to not having more than gloves, helmet and boots. Multiple broken clutch and brake levers and bent handle bars.

🛠️ After

• Lesson Learned: Clutch / Brake Levers once broken put you out of action until replaced. Replacing them at this time required actually going to the Honda Dealership (Motorcycle Unlimited) Wearing protective gear should not be option because you will crash.

• New Approach: Loosen the clutch and brake levers clamps so the levers can have a chance to rotate instead of braking off during a simple low side crash. Wear protective gear and plan on crashing when you ride.

• Positive Outcome: My early start on the Honda 100 was to simply drive in circles on a flat track down the street from my house. I tried to be a Flat Track rider from the beginning and that’s why I had so many low side and high side crashes.

Simply loosening the clutch and brake levers clamps saved me the replacements each time I crashed.

Not sure what the format of 1Rider will be as to sharing lessons learned or how to detail my experiences and mistakes.

(there are so many and probably lucky to still be alive after all of them)

This just my first attempt at contributing to 1Rider and many of the mistakes I have made are painful and regrettable and will take more time to detail.

I like your idea Paul.

Whew, that did not read well until I read that it was in the dirt on a low power bike.

Great place to get a handle on the basics.

How long have you been driving a car or riding a bicycle in traffic to gauge your traffic threat awareness?
