We've seen the signs: "Patrolled by Aircraft" Well here is proof.

Does that apply to splitting too?
I would assume so. Lane sharing / splitting assumes both vehicles are fitting within the lines. At least that's how I ride :ride

edit to add: lane sharing in between dotted lane markings is fine; lane sharing outside of the solid white fog line is not

Determining speed by measuring between two points is a 'Speed Trap', and illegal in CA.

That's correct. Know that CHP (and appropriately certified LEOs) are "certificated visual speed experts" (all radar & lidar operators are) and their visual estimation of speed is admissable in court. Hence, the CHP helicopter has one or more certified visual speed experts on board. GLWT.

Its not particulary hard to achieve- much the same way you learn to judge distance/speed to cross the street as a kid; you know the difference between fast and slow & distance (near/far). Just taken to a higher lever- as an adult through training you can get it down to within a mile or two an hour coming towards you or away.

Time/Distance methods are accurate, just not allowed in California- so we have a fighting chance?

...because you're now *outside* of the lane. There's no lane there to share.
I've been pulled over for this a few times during commute traffic on the single lane section of 37.
I've never been cited in those cases. Each time I was respectful and conceded I shouldn't be out there while suggesting I understand "the spirit of the law."
If I'd been riding like a dick when they saw me, I wouldn't have any firm ground to stand on.
YMMV

It doesn't take "double lines". Crossing a (single) SOLID line on your side is where the trouble begins.

More accurately, crossing a solid YELLOW line (which obviously implies one that's dividing two lanes of traffic going in opposite directions) is the problem.

Single solid white lines dividing lanes going in the same direction, they are advisory only. There are those in some places on e.g. the Bay Bridge.

Double white lines between two lanes going in the same direction mean that lane changes are illegal. There are sections of these on 580 near Pleasanton between the HOV lane and next lane to the right, and elsewhere.

With pics and everything!

Motorcycle Safety Committee was not on board with my suggestion.

I'd imagine I am not alone in frequently passing across double yellows, but mostly in areas where it is remote and with very little traffic. Still, I know doing it front of an LEO won't end well. In some areas I have noticed double-yellow-creep, where the DY sections seem to grow over the years. I am sure with increased traffic some of that creep might be necessary, but there are plenty of DY sections that are silly for motorcycles.

There has been a noticeable increase in actual enforcement. I wonder where they were while the Bay Area became a pitifully un regulated free for all.

Did they just all come back to work, or get hired or what?
There's no way to answer this without getting sucked into the P-Trap.

I didn't know that. I'm still not ok with losing privileges without a guilty plea/verdict. I guess I'm a stickler for that whole innocent until proven guilty thing. :thumbdown
Privileges can be revoked/removed without judicial actions, rights cannot. Driving on public roads is a privilege and innocent until proven guilty is a judicial tenet protected by our Constitution.
