What do you think of Snapchat?

I think it fucking crazy that this stupid app is going for 25B! Meanwhile our company is trying to lead the way in AI, you know something a bit more meaningful than an app for sending dick pics... We better get double that :x

money

FB did $28B in revenue last year alone

IBMs Watson, while increasing revenue double digits, hasn't raised the companies top line... (IBM only did $22B last year)

AI might be cool but it doesn't make money yet.

Someone in the AI space will get an early mover advantage (think similar to google/bing/yahoo search engine war) but how do you scale an AI business before the row catches up?

We are no longer communicating in complete sentences.

the return of symbolism in language, is a cool topic on its own. the rose of emojis, specifically, as well as visual slang, meme, and video has really chnaged what we call written language

language itself really organizes how youi think, organizes your thoughts, your cause effect relationsahip, etc, I would love to read more on how rising visual symbols, or RETURNING, chnages things

I just can't see how a startup is going to bring about AI. The advances in ML/AI are mostly coming from Facebook and Google (more from Google.) I see lots of smaller companies claiming AI capabilities, but most of them are just using approaches that Google was using 10 years ago. AI/ML differentiation is mostly about data, not algorithms, and the big companies have all the data.

Snapchat is a cool business, they do a great product and they have the perfect audience demographic for brand awareness. It is very concerning, however, that Instagram was able to launch their own stories feature and Snapchat's user growth suddenly was cut off at the knees.

Seems pretty high risk to me. The company is selling something that anyone can easily replicate. None of the value is based on assets, or any type of product they are selling. Seems that the value is based solely on the assumption that it will be popular, and they will be able to sell advertising in the future. Never know, it could end up making a profit, or it could disappear overnight.

This is all well and good, but when do I buy in? :thumbup
I missed out on Facebook at $25.00 because I "consulted" with SWMBO.:x

You really think getting the attention and time of over 150 million people per day is easily replicated? :laughing

The market is loving SNAP. Trading at 25.315 as I write this, up 49% from the opening price.

So the market values it at $35 BILLION. Words cannot express the insanity.

:loco

Seriously - are there any brokers here who can point me to put options on this?! Mark my words there's going to be a huge correction by year end once the honeymoon is over and inventors want to see a profit. It happened to facebook and it'll happen here.

yes that's what I think. :rolleyes

The product can easily be replicated.

it al;ready is. IG and whatsapp provide the same service, more or less

its the BRAND

the only thing that actually means anything in modern capotialism, is perception,. snap is a massive brand.

That is exactly what makes it high risk. The popularity of the app can change in an instant when the next fad comes around. It could make a lot of money, or it could tank over night.

very true. snap is inetersting, it isnt as entrenched as facebook and Ig, or whatsapp. it could be, would be huge, but also couldnt. its less entreched than twitter, but twitter's fadig has a lot to do with trol behavior, which snap more easily sidestepps because of its nature

im interested to see what snap does, to makwe themselves more than a gimmick commnication tool, and into a REQUIRED one

I asked this in the other thread.

What kind of data does SnapChat keep on their users? Because if it's more than "none" then that data will also belong to the government and possibly people who want to buy it.

My personal opinion on why SnapChat is so valuable is that it's super ripe for datamining people think that their "temporary" messages will not be seen by anyone other than the recipient.
