What Does a Helmet on the Ground Behind Your Motorcycle Mean?

If I'm on the side of the road and see another rider approaching, I'll premeptively give them a thumbs up or a friendly wave. I wish more riders would do this.

Perhaps it's for height challenged riders- they can take a running start, jump up from the helmet onto the seat, tapping it into gear, clutch/throttle and get going all in one motion? Someone else can figure out how they then get the helmet on their head.

I never knew this before but according to this article if a helmet is left on the ground behind a motorcycle it means the rider is in trouble. Has anyone else heard of this? It was news to me. Is this true or just conjecture?

In trouble with who?
