Title says it all.. I have a friend coming who has never been in Cali and he wants to have some of our "famous" clam chowder in a bread bowl. The few times I've had it at Boudin in SF, I wasn't impressed. Does anyone have any better suggestions?

the place on the Santa Cruz wharf is pretty good, not the one at the end the one in the middle with the italian name

Try those seafood stands / shacks that line up by pier39. Right behind Boudins.

Scotts Seafood in Jack London Square, Oaktown

doesn't come in a bread bowl, but I just tear the sourdough into pieces and throw it in

combine with an oyster platter, crabcakes, Anchor Steam on tap, and you've got a perfect meal

you can ask nitewaif to make u some...she made some for my seafood fest ..it was yummilicious

Your friend is confused. You don't come to San Francisco for clam chowder, you go to Boston.

You come to San Francisco for cioppino, and when you get here, you head straight to the Clam House.

i have to disagree with Boston, go to Rhode Island.

Monterey has some awesome clamchowder..... it is better than anything I had in SF.

Easy.

Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach, CA

I dream about it. I slab 150 miles for it.

It is so thick and creamy with big chunks of clam.

Order the seafood topping. For an extra 50 cents, you get a generous amount of chopped shrimp & crab.

The sourdough bread bowl is great too. And they lightly butter and toast the lid and the big soft cut-out from the soup cavity.

Mmmm

Monterey. Old Fisherman's Grotto on Fisherman's Wharf.

Canned or not, I'd go with these stands. That was the highlight of my dad's visit here. Okay, really, it was the only thing he still talks about, he can't stand touristy stuff. And this won approval because they had the red (Manhattan) chowder, not just the New England. If the whole point is to get it in SF, I'd go there, combine it with all the other sight-see stuff at the Wharf.

Just take them to the SF Wharf in the afternoon without a jacket. When they are freezing their ass off around 5:30, get them some Chowdah to warm up. They'll think it was the best they ever had. ;)

Add peppa and a splash of Tobasco and it will be. :thumbup
