What movie to devirginize my new home theater

For sound you want anything encoded with Dolby Digital DTS 6.1 EX/ES. Best sound around!

I can't believe nobody has suggested "We Were Soldiers". Chapter 15 "Broken Arrow", absolutely awesome! There are some good concerts out with DTS encoding as well.

I'll demo mine if you demo yours... :teeth

if you guys want to test out a sound system, why does everyone insist on over all volume?

wouldnt it be better to test it with something that has good 3d positional sound and clarity?

Well, emotional impact trumps accuracy for me, anyway.

Movies generally aren't mixed with reality in mind anyhow. Spaceships don't actually make noise, handguns actually sound like firecrackers. I was the Sound Designer on an IMAX film on Whales once, and had to make effects for whales passing by underwater...which of course makes no noise. Another funny thing was that I had to make the sound of a Navy sub passing by. It was a big pulsing low end effects, along with the cavitation sounds of the props...which the Navy spends billions on making sure they make NO sounds at all.

Another example: Sound recordists have the ability to record field effects in surround sound, yet these are almost NEVER used. It's a lot better to create a tasty surround ambience than it is to use an accurate one.

I'm not saying that volume is the sole arbitor of a good soundtrack by any means. Anyone can be loud…but that there really isn't much accuracy in modern film soundtracks.

And that's a GOOD thing!

I think I misunderstood your post. By "accuracy" I guess you probably mean "fidelity", not accuracy to an actual enviroment.

Oh well, a long winded response to a misunderstood question...

"Saving Private Ryan" is Gary Rydstrom's best work, I think.

"The English Patient" has fantastic sound also (I recorded the desert wind!)

"The Conversation" (1974) has brilliant sound, but it's probably something only sound effects people really appreciate.

Real question is, when are you inviting the kitchen sink to come watch and test out the new set-up? :curious

Comfy seating for 6. After that it will be SRO.

Days Of Thunder is nice for making noise.

Twister is good.

Uh... what everybody else said too.
