who else makes the best cafe racer to race to each coffee shop in sf..?

From my limited experience (I think my brother would qualify as a hipster)...

They are sarcastic, think that they have an alternative, insightful view of the world (and they love to let you know about that), like to think they are individualistic, but at the same time, they often conform to hipster culture. I guess I don't have a great view of them, since I think they are attention-whores who think that their slightly above-average intellect/literacy makes them just so unique.

There are no true hipsters at Starbucks :x

I think Bay Are an has a pretty good grasp of and attitude towards hipsterism.

LOL! Fortunately, I am several years older, and so could/can beat his hipster ass down. More seriously, we get along well, and although he has very "interesting" views (Occupy-ish), he is a good guy.

How many hipsters does it take to change a light bulb?

Lost-hipster-007.jpg

Its a really obscure number, you've probably never heard of it.

Basically someone who insists on staying up-to-date on the latest trends in consumer products or services (such as clothing, music, tech products, theatre, etc.)

Now, if someone truly dresses on a whim, just going into Goodwill and buying whatever fits their mood regardless if it's in style or not, such as that dude above with pink socks, I'm not really sure if that's hipster. It might be just "expressive-slash-don't give a fuck".

I think there is a lot more to it. This sounds like someone who is merely trendy or "chic."

Hipsters seem kind of emo, have a negative/dark view of society, and they think they have all the answers.

Emo seems to be whole nuther can-o-worms. :laughing What the hell is cutting all about? Back in my day we called that "suicidal."

Back on topic, do hipsters fall into a typical age group? From what I can tell it seems like 20 and 30 somethings.

Mission Hipster :facepalm

Right. To just buy all the newest stuff, wear the latest clothes is surrendering yourself to corporate forces, even if there is aesthetic underpinning (like the speech in "Devil Wears Prada").

So instead, they end up going out of their way to not do so, but with their own groupthink as subsstitute behavior.

I've never been a fan of "re-inventing yourself." To me, that is the ultimate IN-authentic thing to do. But like I said before, sometimes people are convinced of the ultimate deprivation of culture of their upbringing or folkways.

The most positive spin I can put on re-invention would be the example of the person who is gay, but lives in some small-town Bible-belty place. They get the hell out and have to find new ways to act and live because they have never been tolerated as they are.

In a much less dire way, hipsters are rejecting their past and being some new thing. But its hard for me to get over the inclination to just view them as phonies who don't have enough inner sense of self-worth and esteem.

:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl

man... the hilarity and genius behind this thread has made my day

p.s.
i want a pair of those red shoes... but not in red

I think that's the main age group. I picture someone who has a college degree from a liberal arts school, has some time on his/her hands, loves Apple products (for being so "counter-culture," which makes me LOL), has read a few books (mainly alternative views, philosophy, etc.).

Come to think of it, a regular Sink poster strikes me as the quintessential "hipster." :laughing

After 40, most people either get some money or give up. :laughing
The 20-30 hipster set are generally over educated and, underemployed or not, probably not making any money, so whereas 40 years ago they might have been dropping a months salary on a muscle car or saving up to buy a starter house, now a Honda Civic is a years income and a down payment anywhere they can get a job is unattainable, so they fetishize 'curate' (bleurgh) the things they can control (food, clothing, pinterest).

Yeah, agreed. In my opinion, there is some pretentiousness and lack of genuineness. I think many hipsters are disaffected people who have suffered some setbacks, and rather than improve themselves and develop some fortitude, they blame society, the government, corporations, etc. Maybe I am being too general or reading too much into it.

I'm sure we are over-thinkin' it all, but they are successfully "provocative" in the way that art is supposed to be....

I find 'em pretty amusing....from a distance.

PS. Thanks to EJ! So funny!

Yeah, and I'm probably mixing genres or whatever the word is. I think I have simultaneously described hipsters, emos, Occupy-types and hippies into one loser of a human being...:p

There are plenty of age 50+ hipsters, especially women. You'll find them driving VW Beetles, wearing retro 1950's glasses, flamboyantly colored hair, iPhone in a neon-colored case with paisleys on it, and blabbing about various artists and indie flicks.
