ITT: A lot of people offering opinions about a place they've mostly never been.
There are two distinct areas in SR, and both are very different places. The old area in the western valley along 680 between Alcosta and Crow Canyon, and the new part in the Dougherty Valley to the east.
I've lived here in the "old" part of San Ramon for coming up on 25 years. On this side, you'll find your pretty standard-issue old school 'burbs.
On the other side of the hill, personally, I can't stand the Dougherty Valley, and avoid it. It is nice, but completely soulless. It reminds me of Orange County, minus the mega malls. This is where you'll find the cookie-cutter McMansions wedged right next to each other.
Schools throughout are excellent, some of the best in the state, which means lots of families head here for them.
The biggest downside of SR versus, say, Danville, Pleasanton or Livermore is the lack of an older "downtown" area where you can walk around and shop or hit a restaurant. The city has been promising to fix that since I've lived here, and their solution is the hideous and overpriced City Center. The nearby Central Park has (had) a lot of events, concerts, etc.
Pro:
Generally very safe, quiet and drama-free.
Good location if you're working in the tri-valley area.
Very family-oriented overall (may be a con for some)
Con:
If you want any kind of non-mall culture, you have to head out of town. But then again, unless you live in walking distance to downtown, most of Pleasanton is like that as well.
The bottom line is that it really depends on what your priorities are: Is it important to you to have restaurants and shops within walking distance, or are you looking for a quiet spot close to work? If it is the former, and cost is a relative issue, you might check out an apartment in central Dublin.
