And FWIW, the Church itself spends no money on politics (it can't). But...the individual members can and have contributed to conservative causes (hey...they are a religion...what do you expect

). One of the biggest admitted mistakes that the church made was, for the first time, issuing a statement over the pulpit. It created a HUGE internal backlash that cost them a large portion of their membership. You can't based your religion on "free agency" then punish someone for exercising such. I think the Church is becoming more moderate along those lines...but they still have rules many find hard to accept.
As stated earlier, there are large numbers that do not do much association outside of their congregation. Maybe it's their own mental weakness, but they feel protected and safe staying within the "flock." This is not unique to just Mormon's though.
