I haven't been riding for a while... what's the popular trackday tire these days?

When I was racing forumla IV, I really liked the Michelin PR2 front/PR5 rear combination. But even back then, Michelins were falling out of favor.

For you guys that used to ride Michelins, are you still on them? If not, what did you replace them with?

I use pirelli sc2 front and superbike pro rear. I get about 5-6 days out of both. I used to use the michelin power one but I would destroy a rear in 2 days on my 750. CT Racing have them for $375 installed if I remember correctly.
However CT racing has dragon sc2's that were made in 2013 for $275 right now I believe.

The Pirelli deal Chris has is fantastic. I'm actually a huge fan of the pirelli Ross Corsa for a brisk trackday pace. I've got close to 1000 miles on the rear of the one on my Tuono. All trackday. I'm not sure I would recommend it for a fast A pace, but it's great for a slow A fast B pace.

I am the minority being on bridgestones but I get plenty of life out of my slicks. For a dot/street option both Bridgestone and Dunlop have great options (S20 and Q2 respectively).

In my 10 years on the track tires sure seem to have improved greatly. I don't think there is a terrible choice so long as your getting a tire that is made for the task.

Yah tires today are amazing. The street tires are as good as race tires used to be.

Chris is a great guy.. I have run Pirelli's but switched over to Bridgestone last year and have been really happy. R10 DOT for race and the new V01 slicks for track days

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

On my 600 at fast A pace, I would go through a PR5 rear in 2-3 days. I'm on a 750 this time around so I'm looking for something that will have some longevity. Definitely going to go with slicks so that I can flip them. I'll check out the superbike pros that were mentioned in an earlier post.

Define fast A pace... times at t-hill/sears?

Keep in mind you have compound choices as well not just manufacture. The Pirelli's should serve you well...

you can flip DOT's also....just sayin :)

Slow for AFM, but decently fast for a trackday: 2:00-2:02 @THill. Funny thing is that I did the same times on my 600 as my SV... so it's definitely my riding ability that's holding me back.

Really? I never knew. Tread pattern doesn't get in the way?

You're not clearing any water, so it shouldn't matter.

I didn't mean to question your speed or anything like that :)
I am with Ernie. I ran 1:58s at thunderhill all day on Q2s on my 1098. It was a hot day. I tried running them at Sears on a colder day and was not happy. Ran 1:55 at Sears on my 1098 with Rosso Corsas. (3000 street miles and 3 track days - but I ride like a grandma on the street)

Either way, line selection has a lot to do with how fast you can go given a certain amount of grip. I would opt for the best tires you can afford. Cheap insurance against rider error (and we all commit those to a certain extent).

I heard or read somewhere long ago that tires are the only thing that touch the ground so it's good to invest in something good. I'll have speedycorky (Charlie) come and give his advice. He knows his tires a lot more and can give some advice. He's an A pace.

No worries... didn't take it that way.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dunlop NTECs... does anyone run those for trackdays? I saw the thread from EDR saying that the US ones are a lot better these days. How do they wear?

FYI - I don't run tire warmers and just park my bike in the sun... my tires go through a lot of heat cycles.

I just put in 125 miles yesterday at Sears Point on a Rosso Corso rear on the Tuono, and I was amazed at the exit traction. Better than race tires from 10 year ago

I just ran SC1s and 2s for the first time and loved them. SC1 front/SC2 rear, Laguna and Sears. Fantastic grip and decent wear. Going to run a set of SC2s in June, as Chris was out of the SC1 front.
