When Does Theft Most Often Occur?

I usually work in the Southbay but have recently been getting up to Southbeach area SF for some partner meetings. I always see motorcycles lined up happily in their motorcycle parking and I'd love to ride into the city on my own bike. I'm hesitant since I would hate to see my bike stolen. How likely is it that someone would take it during a regular weekday between noon and 8pm?

In my estimation, most theft occurs during the period when the bike is parked in an apartment parking garage.

I park mine on the street every day in the Financial District. There are so many baller bikes sitting around here that I'm hoping thieves will just overlook my bike.

theft occurs when u least expect it.

TADAAAAaaaaAAaaa

While I have had motorcycles stolen off the streets of SF, never have in Financial district where I worked for a couple decades. Worst I had was a helmet stolen off the bike. That said......

It can happen. Your only protection is insurance and possibly a couple of ulocks (both wheels and an alarm on the front one) to deter the casual thief - which I believe is the predominant form of bike theft in the city. Dont leave your bike down there after dark when everyone else has gone home. Park where other motos park on streets (alley parking has less chance of a thief being interrupted). If there is multiple parking areas convenient, change them up. Use your common sense and put comprehensive on your bike.

When you have better shit than they do so they gank your shit to up their shit game.

Insurance and a good disc lock help. A 07 600 CBR is a nice bike but there are so many new Ducatis, Aprilas, KTMs and BMWs parked down there that I would think you might be down the theft list.

Guess its time to finally get a disc lock! Checking w my insurance to see if I'm covered for theft.

Most robberating happens between 3 and 5 in the morning. Guys who tried to boost my bike were a bit tardy at 5:15 AM.

Funny, how everyone seems to think if you have a high zoot, latest and greatest, semi-exotic brand, that it's more likely to get stolen than an older CBR. I'm thinking the CBR is more likely to get stolen since it's probably easier and quicker to off load the bits and pieces. Not to mention, probably easier to steal. I could be wrong, but don't rely on your bike being older and cheaper as protection against theft.

Off the street? Anytime.

Check at 3 minutes in. A front disc wouldn't help in this case. Eeek, CRB too :wow

I was relying on pure ugliness to keep my 636 safe :p. She's out getting painted now so in the garage she goes

It could go either way. Most thieves are lazy-ass opportunists, yet there are stilldie-hard professionals who go for the big scores. Your garaged, alarmed and locked-up $80,000 Panigale race bike is some Oceans-11 level shit to some thieves looking for a challenge with a big payoff.

True. But put your Honda in a row of BMW's, MV's, Ducatis, etc, it still very well may be the one to get stolen.

Quick stupid search says...

Motorcycle theft statistics

The more you know about the tendencies of bike thieves, the better you can stay one step ahead. Here are some key motorcycle theft facts, courtesy of the NICB.

5 most-stolen motorcycles
Honda
Yamaha
Suzuki
Kawasaki
Harley-Davidson

"1. Honda

Thefts: 9,082

Honda accounted for the most thefts in 2012 with 9,082 motorcycle thefts, or 20% of all motorcycle thefts. As of June 30, 3,443 of those vehicles have been recovered."

I don't think that digs deep enough to be illuminating in this case. The fact is exotics make a small percentages of sales and the general rider base. They are also very under represented in most markets outside of California. So gross numbers for the U.S. doesn't really tell us anything specific to California much less theft patterns in the Bay Area and SF.

A couple of interesting conclusion that can be drawn from this report.

In 2013 6637 motorcycles were reported stolen in California and 2596 were recovered. It is fair to say most recovered bikes were probably joy rides vs. professional thieves. Hence the disc lock won't stop a guy with a van or a pro but it stops over half of those that would take your bike, the joy rider. :ride

Disc locks provide enough benefit to be worth the effort. Just don't rely on it.

Also, SF was either #9 (by city) or #12 (by county) in the nation. so we are not in the top 5!:teeth

We have had folks break into our trucks in the middle of the night. When viewing the surveillance footage 4 AM is the average time. It is probably late enough for folks to be up but not too late to get caught by someone walking their dog. The cops probably look twice at people driving around at 2 AM too.
