so i have a 2004 r6 and everytime i fill up i end up putting in like 2 gallons of gas yet i have a 4.5 gallon tank. my light comes on so early and scares me into putting in more gas. My f1-trip meter starts recording my mileage as soon as the gas light comes on. How far can i go on my f1-trip meter? How many miles can i tipically go on a full tank of gas (remember i am breaking in the engine so i can't really take it past 6000 rpm's)?

How big is your reserve. I know that mine on my rr is 0.94 gallons. I can go about 20 miles after that. But it really depends on street riding, what speed your going and at what rpm. Maybe you haven't filled the bike up all the way. Check out your manual or find an R6 forum where people who have the same bike as you can help out.

why dont you just fill it up all the way? you might get about 120 to 140 miles on a tank that size.

The way I read that is that his low fuel light comes on after only two gallons are burned. Is that what you were saying? If so, that does seem awfully soon for the light. Best advice was said above, hook up on an R6 forum. Should have more specific answers. It is fairly common for modern bikes to warn you at around 1 gallon +- left in the tank. Hope this helps.

That's what I like about having a carbureted street bike. Good ol' mechanical 'reserve' (petcock).

On my Sixxer the fuel light comes on when I have about a gallon, but since it is only ridden on the track I don't have to worry too terribly much.

I think you should be able to get a pretty good idea of when you're actually low based on the miles ridden, but that's one of those things that will inevitably bite you in the ass when you forget to watch the tripmeter.
