Man that sucks to hear about. I am a salesman at G&B Kawasaki Yamaha in Petaluma. We have freight and setup fees, but I know there are dealers out there that inflate these fees alot. Freight is always gonna be expensive, what I usually tell folks is that if you can drive to LA, pick up the bike and drive back for less than our shipping charge, then they need to open their own business because there is alot of money to be made shipping bikes.
The setup charge, well, if we don't put it together for you, then you can't get a warranty, and plus you might not really know what the heck you are doing. Some guys say, "Just give it to me in the crate, I don't need no warranty..." These are the same guys that bring their bike in because they broke something really stupid and want to see if WE will pay for it. As far as your bike being half ass assembled, that's just plain negligence, I personally go over the bike after the tech does just to make sure. I'd rather spen an extra 12 mins, nut and bolting, than to have someone tell people that I am an idiot and don't know how to assemble a bike, or worse, an accident. When I looked for a shop to work at, I looked for cleanliness, a full showroom, friendly people, and knowledgeable staff. Seems like I am at the end of the totem pole because they have some guys here that have been here a long ass time. One tech has been here 22 years, that's only 5 less than the business has been around! Anyway, just try to find a more reputable dealer in your area and see how that works out. There are good dealers out there! I promise!
