Which PS3?

Depends on how much you want to spend. Don't even worry about the backwards compatible. Those who really have PS3's don't even think about playing ps2 games through it. Why the fuck play PS2 games when PS3 games are so much better?

This is wisdom right here. We bought the 60 gig thinking we would buy used PS2 games to play...we did and they suck compared to PS3 games.

Get the 80G MGS4 bundle. Good value, badass game.

mgs4 bundle is ~$600 new or used. if you get an 80gb backwards compatible, easiest way to tell is that it has 4 usb ports on the front and card readers. search google for the ps3 wiki, it has lots of info and a chart of the differences and models.
slickdeals.net has been posting some very good deals on the new 80gb models. also there is a sony cc that will give you $150 for spending $300 and you could use that towards a ps3.

supposedly by many reviews, the ps3 is the best bluray player out there.

lots of misinformation going on in this thread, just as it does everytime this subject is brought up hopefully i can help someone out here.

the original 20/40/60 ps3's are all BC with ps2
the metal gear solid special edition is a 40 gig with no BC but has nice paint
the metal gear solid 80gig bundle has BC with ps2 but is hard to find
all of the new 40 and 80 gig ps3's have NO BC with ps2 games

the metal gear solid special edition with the platinum paint is now going for 350, was originally 600

the metal gear solid 80 gig bundle was 499

the xbox 360 and ps3 have graphics that are virtually identical and through the numerous tests no one is yet to determine which machine is "better" as they both have their strong points and both have weak points.

if you want to play online multiplayer games most people opt for the 360 as it has a larger online community and lots of popular "exclusive" games, if you want to watch bluray and browse the web get a ps3.

I own both systems and find myself using the 360 more often, but with the last update on the ps3 they enabled flash support for the web browser im now starting to use it to visit site's like hulu.com to watch tv shows i missed. if im playing an online game i always use the 360.

hopefully that helps some people out:thumbup

Oh, sure I can swap HD in a laptop, it's just a bummer it's not hot swappable.

Cant do it on the Xbox.. on Xbox u have to buy one that comes from microsoft. I got my 80Gig upgraded to a 320gig.. my buddy did it in no Time(i was lazy). the longest part of the upgrade is transfering over save files. Sony even gives u instructions on how to change it. I too am surprise they dont sell it with a HD and let us use our own.

the 80 gig is the last of the series that i know of that is backwards compatible but at this point it uses emulation and not hardware to replay the game. They removed the old ps2 hardware in order to make it more price friendly. THe 80 gig also has a bunch of slots for memory cards SD/CF/SMS and so on. To me the cards slots i can careless for because everything now has some sort of these slots. The backwards compatabilty i can care less for too as i have my original release date PS2 still kicking. I havent touched a ps2 game since before i got my Game cube(well i used it for movies) and i dont i will anytime soon.

Yea it was probably a 5-10 min swap to change out the hard drives on the ps3. Xbox is probably even faster, but you pay out the ass for a smaller size "microsoft" hard drive. You also have to spend like $100 for wireless on the xbox (microsoft only wireless adapter) while ps3 and wii come standard with it.

The hard drive swap for the 360 takes all of 30 seconds. The $100 wireless adapter is only if you want the "cool" 360 one that clips on the back. My old wireless adapter that I used for my og xbox worked just fine plugged into my 360.

I have the 60Gb model, and bought a few cheap PS2 games to mess around with. Once you play a PS3 game, you'll never want to see another PS2 game. But I guess if you already own a bunch of PS2 games, the 60Gb system is the way to go.

you guys are fooling yourself saying once you play a ps3 game youll never want to play a ps2 game. have you guys played god of war 2? shodow of the collusus? graphics arent everything when it come's to gaming.:teeth

Too bad those are probably the only 2 ps2 games i'd go back to play, both of them rocked

Tell him to get a 360 so he can play with the majority of "cool" gamers on BARF. :thumbup

i second that!! :thumbup

If your going to get a ps3 dont even bother playing online cuz its SORRY!!! trust me i also have all 3 next gen systems and xbox is the only one worth spending time online.. with the year long subscribtion it comes out to less than 5 bucks a month too...

Same. Came with the new wireless sixaxis DS3 controller and bundled with MGS4 and cost less than buying a standard 80 gig. unit and MSG4 seperately.

I had to go buy a 24" Dell HDMI monitor to go with it as the resolution was so good I couldn't even read the script on my big screen TV.

However, this handy guide is the best way to determine the best system for you. PC is the way to go!
