Who here has lost their ability to drive a car?

Every now and then when I'm in my truck I start aiming for the gap between cars. Then I realize I'm in a truck.

But I can't see why you feel 65 seems fast in a car. Everything seems ass-slow when compared to my motorcycle.

I have not owned a car for many years now. I have not lost the ability to drive one. I can drive just fine, thank you very much :twofinger. However, what I find is that I do not like being in a car, driving or not. It feels so confining, so constricting. Like, like being in a cage or something...

I couldn't stand going a mile above 65 because it felt too damn fast ... it felt like I was going to crash into the car in front of me if I kept any less than 15 car lengths space ... I found myself checking and re-checking the mirrors to make extra sure that I'm not merging into anyone. When turning right into a crosswalk, I always felt like I was going to run over a pedestrian's foot or something.
It sounds like being a rider made you a more prudent driver. Congratulations!

Every driver should ride a bike for at least one day. It would make a world of difference. Even my wife, a non-rider, is a more prudet driver via the stories I tell her.

Again, you've got something to be proud of yourself.

Marc.

Eh, I still drive to work. It's 4 miles. It'd take way too long to gear up. Plus sometimes I like to stop and buy food on the way home.

Even though I drive a RAV4 (anyone want to shred my mancard?) I still enjoy it. Big motor, electric steering assist, and tires willing to slide...still fun on the way to work.

it felt like I was going to crash into the car in front of me if I kept any less than 15 car lengths space. This was in a relatively new Civic, by the way

Found your problem. Japanese cars, especially econoboxes, tend to have terrible brakes that fade on a single stop from 60. If it was an automatic, that just makes things worse. I always have a hard time keeping proper following distance in automatics, because they just don't slow down when you lift.

Sorry, utterly BS.

I just drove my car for the first ime in a couple of months this past Sunday. I enjoy driving my car very much and I drive it well.

and I don't notice speeding as much in my car...with out the wind hitting my body, I don't realize how fast i'm going....and I don't pay enough attention to the speedometer.

me. I always try to lane split in a car and it gets me into trouble.

my car tends to wander now...but I'm blaming it on the worn tires, thanks for reminding me...I need to get a battery tender for the thing

"Hi, I see you're in the market for a new car. What do you have in mind?"
"Oh, you know, something economic, low maintenance and with decent resale value."
"Well, how about a Corolla or a Civic; they've been the best cars in the last 10-15 years."
"That's great. Any downside about them?"
"Since you asked, the breaks kind of suck, and you won't be able to keep a good distance from the car in front of you, especially in the automatics, but all that is kosher with the DOT."

Dude, your argument is BS! Either your driving skills and techniques suck --most likely--, or you drive improperly maintained cars, but for sure you don't know what you're talking about. Sorry, yes, called out. BS.

Best,

Marc.

dude you are totally right! My evo had terrible brakes! And the focus's i used to sell could stop on a damn dime

And which definition of "better driver" are you referring to? If you mean safer then I was a freaking awesome driver! :teeth

I guess I can't speak for the majority of cagers out there.
but I've always been a motor head. I tried to driver my first car when I was 8.
I'm still bitter that my mom didn't tell me about the hand brake...:x (i was trying to drive my uncle's manual Fiat)

I'm sure I'm in the minority when I say I ride my bike slower than I drive my car... And I intend on keeping it that way. :ride

They do suck. They're on the low end of the market by far.

I didn't claim that the brakes made it difficult to maintain proper following distance, just that they suck and it can cause a confidence problem. The OP didn't provide enough information for any of us to conclude anything for sure.

My tendency to have a hard time maintaining a proper following distance without using the brakes in an automatic *is* a technique problem, you're right. Congrats in misreading my post. I drive automatics only a couple of times a year, so I'm always surprised by how little they slow down when I lift. I was not calling out econoboxes in this regard. It takes me a bit to re-adjust to driving an automatic so that I'm not tapping the brakes on the freeway to maintain following distance, which is poor technique. You should rarely if ever have to use the brakes on the freeway unless you're in very heavy traffic.

BMW CCA.
(Any car make welcome, you just have to be a member of the club, $40/yr).

any special barfer discounts?
i have 2 bimmers and i'll probably end up getting the lifetime membership cuz it doesn't look like i'll stop driving bmws anytime soon.. :p:teeth

It's just particularly hilarious that you accused Japanese economy car brakes of sucking. Go drive a Civic and a Cobalt back to back and let me know which one has the crappy brakes. Or a Yaris and an Aveo, that should be particularly fun. I swear to god the brakes on an Aveo feel like it's deployed a grocery bag from the trunk to slow down.

Sorry, we sell out almost every event, so no discounts at this time. Next one is Sunday Oct 11th in Marina, registration open now, already over half full (online reg only, no on-site reg). www.bmwautocross.com. We just had an event at Great America... location was awesome, light poles were not. We are very limited on course design there.

...but we like to give 6-8 runs, more than most local clubs I think.
