Yup... we decided that adventure riding is a bit different than sport touring and cruising.. several folks have asked about doing this and it seemed like a good time.!

Let me be the first to post a cool mixed route with pavement, gravel and dirt roads:

Alturas, Modoc County, CA,>395 North> Fandango Pass Rd. East to North on Surprise Valley Rd.>Surprise Valley Rd. to and through Fort Bidwell>Big Valley Rd.> Twentymile Rd.> Adel, Oregon (Regular gasoline, a cowboy country cafe>

140 West>Andy Hill Rd. South>Andy Hill Rd. East> West Side Rd. South> (Follows the West Side of Goose Lake) West Side Rd. East> 395 South to Alturas. In dry conditions, hard packed dirt, rock, gravel Forest service roads. The Warner Mountains separate the lake and Fort Bidwell. High desert.

Pardon my ignorance, but... what exactly distinguishes "adventure riding" from "sport touring" or, for that matter, "dirt riding"?

If I'm on Highway 96 or somewhere in BFE Nevada or wherever, and I end up riding on gravel for a mile or two, does that automatically upgrade my trip to an "adventure ride"? What if I ride on a city street that's torn up for construction? Or how about a run-of-the-mill ride down Tunitas Creek or Morgan Territory? That's fairly "adventurous" compared to the riding most folks do, but those roads are (sort of) paved. :p

I'm sure you see my point... are we at risk of over-compartmentalizing ourselves? I certainly do feel "special" because I ride a V-Strom and occasionally travel where sportbikes fear to tread, but I'm not sure if that qualifies me as an official Adventure Rider(tm) even though I have one of them Adventure Bikes(tm).

I really need to know, so I can share this information with my friends on the gay sportbike forum -- but not the gay cruiser or gay BMW forums... those people are FREAKS! :twofinger
 
you'll probably find the trolling to be better on your gay wee-strom forum while going incognito as a straight bmw rider.
 
To give you an answer it is really about the combination of pavement and dirt.

Can be more dirt.. but with more specific types of on/off road bikes.

Your bike qualifies.. throw some knobs on it and your are truly ready to ride the southwest trails and such.. connecting pavement to good stuff..

It is an adventure to ride a 500lb bike in the dirt.. :teeth

Are we over-compartmentalizing? I don't think so. We ("adventure dorks") have different interests in what we do in the same way trackday riders and racers do, so I think it's all good.

When I want to get my adventure-snob on I roll over to Adventure Rider anyway. :p
 
I'm an adventure rider because I have an ADV sticker. Plus, have you tried rolling into the Squidbucks parking lot with a dirty KLR? That's an adventure in and of itself! :twofinger
