Why don't cops wear armor?

protective gear for motorcycle LEO

What are your clothes made out of? How come only short sleeve shirt?
Do you guys have motorcycle protective gear under your clothes (back protector, etc..)?

When I ride to/from work it is in textile jacket with a back protector. bull-it motorcycle pants, etc...

The uniforms police motors wear are made of the same materials (wool, poly, cotton) as non-motor officers wear. A few depts out there allow textile suits/jackets/pants. Under the shirt is a "bulletproof" vest which does provide quite a bit of torso crash protection but is also heavy and hot.

What officers wear is a combination of what is allowed by each dept policy and the weather conditions. Most would choose to wear more protective gear if allowed but they must also consider work duties other than just riding the bike. If I just got paid to ride from point A to B all day, I would wear all the protective gear allowed all the time. Unfortunately, while making a stop or arriving at a collision I don't have time to take off my gear. Leaving the gear on works out fine in the winter but when it's 80-90 degrees try walking around on the side of the road in your full gear for 20-40 minutes a dozen times a day.

From what I have learned is, that a Kevlar vest, works well as a back protector and can prevent road rash in most circumstances to the torso.

Each and every agency specifies what a motor Officer may wear on the job.

:2cents I'd like to see better helmets as an option.
