Why pay MSRP ever?

who knows
I've noticed that every time somebody posts the price they paid for their new bike, 20 people chime in about how the OP paid too much. All these guys swear they paid around 2k under MSRP. Where are these people buying thier bikes? Are they full of it?

well I think if they told you where, then maybe they wouldn't get that price:teeth

The salespeople still get a commission even if they sell a bike for under MSRP.

lol. that doesn't make any sense. That's like saying, "you paid too much because i payed less at a place that would not sell you a bike at my price."

Dealers don't make any commission if they sell bikes at cost. What is the markup? my company has a 300% markup, but i can't imagine a gixxer 1k costing the dealer $4000. Or maybe I'm just in the wrong bidness.

The commission is typically a small percentage of the profit, not the sale value. Under MSRP = very little profit margin, and a substantially lower commission...

But FWIW - I agree with the earlier post that people often lie about their "deals" to either make themselves look better, or because they're embarassed about the price they actually paid....

-Q!

I used to sell cars and I can say I will not buy anything for 500.00 over what the dealer got it for. It's really simple to do, you just have to do your homework. Play dealerships against each other, pay it up front etc etc.

Ive posted this before and the only dealers that wouldnt deal with me was ktm none of their dealers would deal. on japanese bikes i look up every dealer within the distance im willing to drive to pickup a bike. I then email the sales manager the model and color of bike im interested in and i'm honest with them
I'm shopping on price and price only I dont want to hear about your service dept or you parts dept i dont care how pretty your dealership is! Once i pickup this bike you wont see it again if you make me a good deal i'll give that consideration on my next purchase. some dealers will play some wont it doesnt matter to me a suzuki is a suzuki all the dealers have them thier business is selling bikes My business is wanting to buy a bike for the best price i can get. its a cash deal no bullshit im in with the cash and out with the bike in my truck. I have gotten some really good deals on brand new kawasakis hondas and suzukis generally between $1000 and $4000 less than what local dealers in Sac wanted for the very same bike. I have had dealers bidding against each other for my business on brand new current year bikes likea gsxr 1000. when i bought my 06 gsxr 1000 a guy showed up at work with a new one he bought at the same dealership i got mine at a week later he paid $4000 more otd than I did at the same dealer no accessories just the bike! you have to go in as an informed consumer and know what they are selling for at various dealers and if they wont meet your price go elsewhere.
Somebody out there wants to sell that bike one dealership might be hungrier than the other its my job to find the hungry dealer. I bought my all black brand new 07 busa for $1700 less than the cheapest local dealer in Sac wanted for for 06 models. now theres no difference in the bikes except i got black and i wanted black and the resale later might be a bit higher since the bikes a year newer. I look at it like this in an unemotional way its a machine not a puppy they all have the same personality they are all made in the same factory there isnt only one say gsxr 600 for sale statewide if they dont have one and want to make the sale they will get one its that simple.

an old timer once said, everyone sells their house for double market value and pays 1/2 of msrp for their car

i've bought all my bikes off craigslist. or barf.

I've always purchased my bikes for 1-2k under MSRP. If the bike is a hot new model, you may not get under MSRP. When the R1 came out in 05 with some changs, it seemed they were all selling right away, dealers wouldnt work with me. So I waited about 6 months and ended up getting a new R1 for about 1800 under MSRP.

My latest bike, my Ducati, was purchased at 3k off MSRP. When the model came out in 2007, that would have been unheard of. You just have to do your homework, shop around and have patience. If nobody can keep the bike in stock, dont expect a deal. If you call all the dealers in area and they all have 2-3 of same color in stock and its near end of model year, expect a deal.

+1

MSRP and dealer cost are 2 different animals. It's no match to get a vehicle under the MSRP price. It's when you start to get close to the dealer cost that it's getting tricky.

But keep this in mind, even if the dealer sells the vehicle exactly at his cost he still makes a profit because of the manufacturers kickback of, usually, 0.5%.

So when you hear the whining that he doesn't make any money on the deal you should know that it's nothing but bullshit.

if it's on teh BARF, it has to be tr00f....:x

I think in the interest of journalistic integrity you and everybody else claiming they bought their bikes for way under invoice price (like your GSX-R1000) should post sales docs. from the deal showing the price you paid. You can black out personal info...

Or we gotta call :bs

I'm sure you're telling the truth; I'd just like to see the breakdown.
