Why split city traffic when moving?

Sometimes I see people splitting through traffic on city streets, faster than the 30-40 mph flow of traffic. They're not just threading through tight traffic, but actually splitting while everyone is going 30-40 mph. I never understood this, because they've got to realize they'll just hit a stop light, where they can then just filter up to the front to the red light.

I've had people split by me in moving traffic, and 100% of the time, they'll hit a red light, and I'll split up to them at the same intersection. Or when the road opens up, they'll be maybe 100 yards ahead. Is it really worth the risk?

So I'm wondering why? Just excited? Does anyone do this here? Do they want me to look at their ass? Should I yell, "yeah, you do have a nice ass, brah!"

I'm probably the few that don't even split lanes in City traffic....

I find pockets/cushions in traffic and move ahead when safe and be courteous as I change lanes..

I don't need the added stress ...

They split because they can!:twofinger

Actually it makes no sense. I'm usually too asleep on the way to work or too tired on the way home to deal with splitting lanes unless traffic is more or less stopped. When traffic is moving, gaps are constantly opening and closing. When a car moves into a gap and you're trying to split past, you're going down.

I don't split 'cause I don't like splat...

If I'm in an aggressive mood I'll lane share ALL the time, for no reason other than because I can. Most of the time I'll just chill unless traffic is at a stop or there's a line of more than 3 cars at a light.

Just about everywhere else in the world where splitting or filtering or whatever you want to call it is the norm rather than the exception most bikers would look at you funny and shake their heads because you asked such an odd question.

That's absolutely true.

It's too bad we live in California, where two wheels aren't the norm, where a LOT of people think it's illegal (which goes to show just how many people are actually looking for bikes, or care), and even more have no idea a motorbike could be in their blind spot right when they decide that the next lane is moving 1 mph faster than the one they're in.

On top of this, from what I see, they don't get any where quicker. I dunno, from all the "car hit me while I was splitting" threads, maybe someone who splits 100% of the time, will read this and try something different? That's why I asked the question, maybe there's a reason, or I'd at least like to know why, and not be judgmental.

If traffic isn't going the speed limit or am at a red light I'll share lanes. I love to share lanes every chance I get but there's no reason, or benefit to sharing when traffic is already moving the speed limit, overtaking a car is going to be speeding.

I guess maybe there's just a large number of speeding splitters near where I live. Come to think of it, I haven't really seen it any where else.

Thanks.

To explain it best why some laneshare at higher speeds. While others laneshare at lower speeds.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't :teeth

Many reasons for it, most I can't know, cause I'm not that other rider. It could be the difference of exposure. Someone who rides same commute will laneshare faster because their feed up with this shit :laughing

:thumbup +1

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I sit and just move with flow of traffic. Other times, Im always lanesharing. If Im trying to get somewhere, It makes it feel like you are moving faster if you split lanes. I dont think there is really a reason other then "cause we can"

The days I have class after work I bring my bike because by splitting I get home at least 30min faster. Or maybe it just feels that way. :twofinger

i dont like to sit in traffic period, i like to keep moving
i dont want to get accidently tapped from behind

so you just want to be accidentally tapped from the side? :wtf

just joking, i like lane splitting. i do it every chance i get. :ride

So then, based on all the "car hit me while I was minding my own business in my own lane" threads or "I went down through my own damn fault in a solo vehicle crash" threads, I should then stop riding completely?

If you split, you might get hit. If you don't, you might get hit. If you don't get hit, you might fall down go boom anyway.

It's safer to a point.. ???

It never fails.. I mean never fails..

If you've ever had cars 360ing behind you.. because they didn't pay attention and slammed on the brakes and spun out and hit the guard rail where you were a 10th of a second before that.. (happened more than once to me.)

You'll share, split...and fucking FLY through cars the second your 6th sense tells you to.

when cars get on the brakes.. I get on the gas..
