Will changing speed to 20 on 23 streets in SF have an effect on deaths?

No. No one gives a fuck about the speed limits in the City. Cops won't even stop if there's a mugging or vehicle break in, you think they give a shit if some jackass in an Infiniti or Charger is doing 50?

There are two corners on our residential street and last year they put 10mph signs up to slow folks down.

Didn't do a thing of course, I go 15+ on my bicycle for crying out loud.

If SF doesn't enforce 25 they won't enforce 20.

They should make laws against doing donuts on the freeway.

I wasn't aware SFPD did any speed enforcement what so ever :dunno

Who benefits from this?

The companies who manufacture and change the signs for SF will make some money.

The lawmaker(s) who proposed it can point and say "look what I did for the greater good".

Probably a bit too paranoid, especially for something so minor. Not everything is an angle. Sometimes people just do things because they think it will help, even if it's silly.

You'd think they'd be able to even say how many speed related deaths happened in that area

If the person hitting people is doing 60 in a 25 what does lowering the speed limit do?

Right, a cost benefit analysis showing what's happened in other cities who did this would be nice.

The article only says speed is the leading cause of fatal accidents - DUH.

Leading cause of Death in America is heart disease but you don't see walks for it because it requires lifestyle changes. No, we raise money for stuff nobody can do anything about.

Well it sets up more $$ from the speed cameras.
Assuming that gets passed.

HEY!

I resemble that remark.

Let us all raise a glass of gasoline and prepare to deeply and with all our best effort fight the good fight to keep that trash off the block.

I dunno...I actually do pay attention to speed limits in congested areas. I know how I feel when someone's doing 50 on my street--it pisses me off. It's loud, puts kids and pets in danger, it's unnecessary. I'm not such an important person that I justify speeding in denser areas, so I drive pretty chill. Now, out on the freeway--screw that. My vehicle is capable of 150 mph easy, the roads were designed for it, but the speed limit is half that? That seems arbitrary. I keep it in check because I don't like tickets, but I don't have to like it. I'm torn on the twisties. I realize there's safety behind those numbers, so I blow it sometimes and other times I am more respectful.

+10mph is just a default for everywhere.

SF is definitely a different vehicular environment than my 'hood here in south OC. I never mess around with excessive speeding in the community. Most other people aren't super speeders too. Stop lights and running reds a bit more of a problem around here but at least for lower speed limits, down here, I think it would make a difference.

Up in SF, I believe y'all this change amounts to a whole lot of nothin.

Before that, they should makes laws not to sell Chargers/ Challengers and Nissans to people.

Vision Zero is failing across the whole State.

It is because the whole thing is fucking stupid, in SF in particular.

You have a fundamental problem in SF in that they want to eliminate Traffic Incidents by making driving in the City as inconvenient as possible. You have a lot of really vocal douchebags, particularly the most vile subhumans of the Bicycle Scum set, who really have the goal of not allowing Cars inside the City at all. What is worse, for the most part, the City seems to be very comfortable with a zero enforcement policy for bad behavior by pedestrians and Bicycles.

It is a complete failure of leadership and of Government policy. Individual vehicles simply aren't going anywhere. The need will not go away and will not be reduced as long as SF remains an employment hub surrounded by millions of People in suburban sprawl.

Responsible leadership would be investing in infrastructure that made driving a vehicle in the City easier, more convenient, and largely separate from the pedestrian traffic, but they just don't have an interest in that, so you get the clusterfuck we have instead.

maybe I go get a Delta 88 or Lincoln Continental and drive 12.5 MPH on those streets
