Our CEO just sent us a Video.. Basically he said don't expect to come back to work anytime soon. The Entertainment industry was the first one to go and will be the last ones back to work.

I work for a large equipment provider for TV, broadcast, Broadway, concerts, and corporate audio visual events and trade shows. As much as he tried to put a positive spin he also made it clear that the situation in our industry is dire and completely unknown..

Not a big deal for me yet so I'll just soldier on and wait to see what happens.

I was contacted by my Gym. 24 HR.

I am the OG group x instructor.

Will you work?
Will you clean the class mats and stereo?

I said sure to all. Told the wife and she said “Your not cleaning mats!! WTF”

We arespeaking with our bank to see if we can set up esy low interest financing plans for our clients. What we do is expensive and the 2 stop orders killed us for 2020. If we can offer them financing through our banks it may be doable?

Good for everyone who can do this. This is a good thing. The resistance to flexibility in hours and location is bullshit. This may be a pretty big shift in our socio economic structure.

good question. the short answer is no.

the subject of the personal impact is something everyone i know is discussing. in the experience of myself, my colleagues and friends who are working at home, everyone is putting in way more hours than previous, which were already long to begin with (no natural boundaries to the day - so you get focused on something and you don’t stop). and then there’s the shift in infrastructure and supply cost (e.g. office space, equipment and supplies) from being central and paid as an overhead expense by the employer, to being paid by individual employees. this can currently be written off on individual income taxes (unreimbursed employment expenses), but if the trend gets too large, state and federal tax law may be subject to change (as it stands, it would end up basically being a not insignificant business subsidy - and it’s hard to imagine that wouldn’t draw the attention of law-makers). if my personal experience is any evidence of what is happening more broadly - productivity is going up while overhead cost is going down (perfect gross margin improvement scenario for any business). which is why all indications i’ve seen are that work at home will become a trend that will continue beyond the current situation.

that said, as the economy stabilizes, and starts to grow again, IMHO it would be a tall mountain to climb if on top of the very obvious benefits companies are gaining through having significant portions of their workforce working remotely, they wanted to reduce salaries. at that point, there would be no reasonable arguement for that, and i for one, would tell my employer to go fuck themselves (for reasons stated above).

Anyone else notice their power and water bills go up now that they are working from home and using more utilities? Mine have gone up now that I'm spending an extra 40+ hours per week at home.

Funny you should ask, when I started working from home mid march I was actually curious about that.

Turns out my April 2020 gas bill (which is usage from mid March to mid April) increased 41.5% over April 2019 and 28.9% over it's lifetime average. My heat was on all day every day. Usually the program turns it off for about 10 hours while I'm gone on the weekdays. Luckily spring has sprung so it hasn't turned on at all for a couple of weeks.

Electric bill didn't increase at all. All the lights are still off all day, the only thing running that wouldn't normally be is my laptop and a monitor.

Not sure why my water bill would increase, it's not like I'm taking extra showers while I'm home all day...

But I'm just a single dude. I'm sure if a family of 4 was home all day instead of going to work and school everything would go up.

My water bill went up as well. I chalk it up to the fact that I'm definitely flushing the toilet a lot more than I used to since I'm actually here all day. And, since I'm now cooking at home a lot more, I'm also running my dishwasher quite a bit more.

I thought that it would be about even since I don't do as much laundry since I'm basically walking around the house and working in my pajamas all day, but I guess the toilet flushing and dishwasher really do use a lot of water.

Well... had my first temperature check going on the building walk today.

Hardly anyone in the building, but there were 6 of us touring for building modifications.

Answer these questions: After all responses being NO the thermometer went to by forehead. Weird moment bound to be repeated for months to come.

fill out all "no" and your name, then photocopy it for daily use, gonna save me the bazillion daily no and name printing, now just fresh signature and date....hopefully they wont gimme shit for it

3x each day I go to work. You get used to it in a hurry.

Unfortunately, ours is computer based in th HR software.

With the change coming for major tech companies assuming a lot will continue the work from home option into the future real estate should be slowing way down here in WuSilicoHan Valley.

I see the dot com bust (real estate wise) and a lot of "for lease" signs coming x 2.

Hope not.. but I am also good with less pollution and less traffic.
The only bright spot for me.

I am going over the books on Sunday. If I am not posting on Monday check the local bridges..

I just got off the phone with my county planning department. They are figuring things out. They take turns rotating into the office, 2 days on, then the next person gets 2 days on. They have a sanitizer come in every 2 days so really minimizing the risk. Things have for sure slowed down but at least this way plans and permits are happening.

i wouldn’t get discouraged just yet. a portion of the reason that companies are embracing the work at home model is that they don’t have the current space for low density occupancy. maybe the lowering of demand combined with the lowering of density will reach an equilibrium. if i were in the business of providing commercial property or the design of commercial spaces (so many considerations that are potential opportunities to sell a multitude of needed goods, services and restructured property), i would be working on innovation around re-designed spaces - and look for opportunities to market that. if a company working in that arena were quick, they could likely get in and get some good business before the market begins to flood.

and i also think this is going to be more than a short term trend (3-5 years minimum, and possibly a permanent adoption - similar to sneeze guards at salad bars).

so i would encourage you to climb back over the railing, put your entrepreneurial thinking cap on, and get to work.
