Workplace Snitches

Myself, at work, and most probably you guys too, I'm thinking, "Should I have a Carne Asada, or Al Pastor burrito for lunch? Shall I put on a set of Q2s this time, or PR3s?". Meanwhile, Bunky over on the next row of milling machines is thnking , "That bastard over there has bought 5 motorcycles in the last year, and pays someone to wash his dog. All I've got is this old Pinto, I'll show him. Boss, boss, he was 35 seconds late coming back from lunch, and I heard he goes to the casino and worships Jimmy Page......wah, wah, wah....."

Why don't you guys talk it over with him and ask each other if you're getting the same salaries or not. That should settle it, no?..... ok maybe it's not the best approach or maybe I'm not very serious, but hey, it's worth a try. :thumbup

All the journeymen make the same. Its not a pay issue. I believe its a "being on the bosses good side" issue. Except it doesn't seem to matter.

And I have a catsitter for when we go outta town for more than a day.

I hear people openly bitch along those lines at my shop too. Kids not understanding what it means to pay their dues and do the crappy jobs for less money until they have enough experience/knowledge that they get to sit on the top step in the yard. The apprentice having to do a transmission R&R thinking he shouldn't have to do that kind of work because it's too heavy duty...I should do it since I make so much more than he does.

I tell him I get more money, not because I'm expected to work harder than he does (there's people who work at In&Out who work harder than either of us for even less money), but because throughout the course of a typical week, I will ask someone for help maybe...maybe one time if that. He can't even make it through a single hour of a day without asking yet another dumb question I would've thought he'd already learned by now.

I swear to......sigh. *I actually facepalmed just now.

He asked me the other day where the bigger tires go on a BMW. What's sad is that I asked my girlfriend and she immediately knew the answer, and why. What's sadder is that he is the one who took the tires off in the first place.

5 bikes, the dog groomer, and don't think i forgot about that Escalade.

If the dude makes the same as you and still drives a Pinto, then he must have a ridiculous drain of his income going somewhere. Alimony and/or child
support maybe?

Whatever it is, even though whatever his situation is probably his own doing, I can see how that'd make him a bit bitter.

Drug and alcohol issues maybe? I've worked with guys that made $70k a year, yet drank and smoked so much dope they couldn't keep their cars registered, and didn't even have a payment to make on it, yet somehow, it was the companies fault.

But, like I said, it isn't necessarily aimed at me, its just a culture that seems to run through the company. It goes on all around me here.

An example is , I'm thinking, should I change my oil?, others seem to worry about why Ben in shipping just bought a new Corvette. Worrying more about what others are doing, than what is going on in their lives, and trying to bring others down.

You'd have to be pretty messed up in the head, as you've pointed out, to consciously come up with that strategy.

Perfect way to subjugate an entire country. How else could a tiny country like England rule the entire subcontinent of India? It worked very well in every country they ruled...until it didn't.

Walk into a country, choose an opressed minority and make them your bureaucrats, giving them special privileges. They get cocky and lord it over the majority. The majority will spend their time hating them, blaming them for their problems...not the overlords.

Divide and conquer, works every time.

But it pays to learn a few phrases, to use when different "sides" are trying to drag you into their drama.

Here's the one's I use;

1) "Oh yeah, I hear you"
2) "wow, really ? ! "
3) my favorite, not really a phrase, more of a tactic. Spend some time thinking about your workplace and figure out one thing that you'd like to change/improve. Make sure it's completely non-controversial, and inoffensive to management. Let that item become YOUR agenda. Whenever one of the "sides" tries to engage you in their drama, use one of the phrases above and then change the subject to YOUR agenda. Soon they'll get tired of your "dumb" pursuit of something constructive and low drama, that doesn't validate them, and start leaving you alone.
I wish I was this smart, FUCKIN WISDOM !!

I usually lead with, "WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR MALFUNCTION !?!!", or something similar. That just gets you moved around at the soonest opportunity, as bringing things out into the open makes everyone uncomfortable (I suck at politics).

So get your shit straight and follow sagegrey's advice :thumbup

Is the "snitch" really snitching or has management presented it that way? Workplaces are easier to disrupt than any other venue in our lives. Face it, very few of us really want to be there and who better to attack than the guy that appears to make the best of it.
I'd tread lightly around the Pinto driver until you know for sure what is driving the dynamic.

I fuckin' swear that's why certain people hate me wherever I go. I can't be bummed out; and I make it a point to take care of MYSELF, e.g. Starbucks in the morning, going out for lunch, not letting anything bother me, being happy: I swear, people start to dislike me because they never see me down. Always, everybody seems to love me, except for a few select people - the miserable ones and the tyrants.

You wanna know what the funny part is? It's always the people who seem to always be miserable with their lives too.....hmmmm, wonder why? :laughing

Basically, this is my workplace mantra:

You guys have got some very good, interesting points. There are some very fucked up people out there. Myself, at work, and most probably you guys too, I'm thinking, "Should I have a Carne Asada, or Al Pastor burrito for lunch? Shall I put on a set of Q2s this time, or PR3s?". I'd fuckin' fire your ass right there!! Everyone knows you're supposed to worship HENDRIX! :x

I'm guessing these are unhappy people. Drugs/alcohol to excess is usually an attempt at self-medicating... and when you're life is an unhappy place, it's the last place you want to be looking, or even thinking about... so your focus is outwards, looking for distractions. And when they see someone who's enjoying their life, exhibiting a level of contentment, all that does is provide a sharp contrast to their lack of contentment... and then, instead of doing something productive about it, and making things better, they'd rather drag you down to Unhappy Land, with them.
Kind of like me watching a really talented bass player... instead of being inspired to get rid of my fake nails, take a bunch of lessons, and put hours into playing and practice, I'd rather just grab some bolt cutters and lop their stupid fingers off... :)

I have been watching this thread all week. I did not want to comment on my workplace situation, but I have been LIVID all week due to to a-hole blaming me for something while I was on vacation!!!

It is 100% false and I have documentation to back it up. The person accused me of not having calibrated equipment, not performed trainings, etc. But EVERYTHING is 100% documented and dated. I'm considered an expert in my field and my job send me all over the globe to teach others.

I talked to his boss and his boss is a tool. I told him that his employees actions reflect VERY poorly on him. I was beyond pissed, but OP- let my example be a lesson- I've been doing my job for 25+ years, and you will always run into miserable jerks who try to bring you down because they are soo unhappy. Quitting is not the answer.

Just enjoy your life and know that you are not a miserable clown like those guys.

You've just described "verbal judo" or "tactical communication". Cops use it all the time and they even train it in the academies. "I appreciate that, but...redirect them back to the issue at hand". If you think about it, this is what we primarily do all day, besides writing reports. We're constantly dealing with other people's drama, getting victims who get off on a tangent back on track, and getting people to do what they don't want to do.

I've also worked with the tattletale type before and one particular person comes to mind. Soooo glad I don't work with her anymore. It most certainly is a sign of incompetence and a defense mechanism to attempt to take negative attention off of themselves. In the long run it never works and usually everyone hates working with them.

Just want to toss my .02 behind the others who say that this culture is rolling downhill from management...it's really *their* problem, and they created it.

Were I you, I would first NOT panic. Second I would start looking for another job at a leisurely pace. You will likely find something better paying, and with less drama.

But if you haven't been in your current job at least a year, stay a full year before splitting. :thumbup

BTW, Happy National Corndog Day!!!!
